After the statement is written, collect signatures. The next day, Wu Han came to Zhujiajian Island with the manuscript and asked Zhu Ziqing to sign it. Zhu Ziqing wrote his name trembling. In that day's diary, Zhu Ziqing wrote: "This matter costs 6 million French francs every month, which has a great impact on the family, but I decided to sign it. Because I am anti-American and help Japan, I should start directly from myself. Although this is only a spiritual protest, I should never evade personal responsibility. " Zhu Ziqing is a person who talks about tourism. After signing, he asked his family to return the ration card. More than a month later, on August 12, Zhu Ziqing died of stomach and kidney disease. On his deathbed, he didn't forget to tell his family not to buy American-aided flour because he signed the statement.
Looking back on this signature activity initiated by Wu Han, I think of several questions.
First, is it appropriate to mobilize university teachers to reject American flour? At that time, this low-priced American flour was not "icing on the cake" for the survival of these teachers and their families, but a real "timely help" to help those in need. This is one aspect. On the other hand, no matter how many lives this kind of international economic assistance can really save, its humanitarian nature cannot be completely erased. Today, it is obviously inappropriate for Wu Han to completely politicize and ideologize this kind of aid. But it is understandable that Wu Han did so at that time. Anti-American and anti-Chiang Kai-shek were their tasks at that time. They are always looking for opportunities to attack the United States and Chiang Kai-shek. When they find such an opportunity, they will not let it go easily.
Second, when Wu Han mobilized teachers to sign this statement of refusing life-saving food, should he choose more or less objects? For a statement of this nature, the more signers, the better, but after all, more people and fewer people have nothing to do with the protest. Therefore, for people who are overworked, seriously ill, and especially need this kind of "relief food", should they not be mobilized to sign, or even politely refuse their demands? And Zhu Ziqing is such a person who should "let go". By the time Wu Han signed his autograph, Zhu Ziqing had actually fallen into a serious life dilemma. Malnutrition makes the illness worse day by day, and the whole family is half hungry and half full. In this regard, Zhu Ziqing's wife, Chen Zhuyin, recalled in the article "In Memory of Zhu Ziqing": "Our family has a large population and it is particularly difficult. In order to make a living, Pei Xian (according to Zhu Ziqing's words) had to take a serious illness and write more articles desperately, often writing late into the night, even until dawn. At that time, a family had two meals of coarse grains a day. Sometimes in order to take care of his stomach trouble, I make him some flour and rice. He never eats alone and always gives it to the children. " When signing the statement rejecting American flour, "his condition is very serious and he vomits badly-the doctor said that he should have an operation as soon as possible." Zhu Runsheng also said in the book "Dreaming of Green Yang Qing-Recording Zhu Ziqing's Father and Yangzhou" that during the spring and summer of 1948, Zhu Ziqing's illness became more and more serious, and stomach problems often occurred. Vomiting during the attack, and the pain lasts all night or even several days. -On June 9th, he wrote again, saying:'-Wu Han also said it in "About Zhu Ziqing's Failure to Receive American Relief Food". His face is thin and his voice is low. He has seven children, big and small, and his life is more difficult than anyone else. But when he finished reading the manuscript, he signed it immediately without hesitation. He has always performed well in writing. This time, he signed his name meticulously with trembling hands. "After reading Wu Han's memories and knowing Zhu Ziqing's physical and living conditions at that time, I think people have reason to ask: Since Zhu Ziqing was in such a state at that time, why can't he ask Zhu Ziqing to sign the statement rejecting life-saving food? -but this problem seems to Wu Han is not a "problem" at all. He didn't think about it at that time, but in retrospect, he was only filled with pride. However, if the humanitarian spirit is completely excluded from the "revolutionary spirit", it will have terrible consequences. Since the Cultural Revolution, Wu Han has been treated inhumanely and even died in prison. You can't say you can't find a reason.
