The Moon in Hu Shi's Life
-Interview with Mr. Jiang Yongzhen
Jiang Dongxiu is a temperate person.
Xin 'an: Hello, Professor Jiang, you are a professor of history at Depot University in Indiana, USA. Recently, your first book, Who Are You But Me, is a biography of Hu Shi. But before that, you should have left a deep impression on readers with the book "Stars, Moon, Sun and Moon" about Hu Shi's emotional world. How did you think of writing such a book?
Jiang Yongzhen: I wrote about the stars and the moon by accident. I originally wrote a biography of Hu Shi, but when I was doing research in China, many files were not copied, so I had to copy them by hand. Hu Shi left a lot of materials, including 2000 Chinese materials and 500 English materials. I decided to start with English, so I found so many love letters that I thought I could turn them into a book.
The title of this book was inspired by Cao's letters. At the end of several letters she wrote to Hu Shi, there was no signature, only a crescent moon was drawn. She also told Hu Shi that you have the temperament of the sun. I think in Hu Shi's emotional world, if he is the sun, the most important woman around him is the moon, and the others are the stars.
