"Spring Breeze" by Bai Juyi of the Tang Dynasty

The spring breeze brings out the plum blossoms in the garden first, and then the cherry, apricots and pears bloom.

The shepherd's purse and elm pods are deep in the village, and the spring breeze is coming for me.

Translation

The spring breeze blew, first the plum blossoms in the garden opened, and then the cherry blossoms, apricot blossoms, peach blossoms, and pear blossoms all opened one after another. Even the shepherd's purse beside the tree and the elm pods growing in the deep village seem to say, the spring breeze is blowing for me.

Appreciation is as follows:

This poem describes the spring breeze, which nurtures all things, and expresses the poet's joy in welcoming the spring scenery. At the same time, he borrowed objects to express his dissatisfaction with the unequal hierarchy in society. The first two sentences describe the flowers blooming in the spring breeze. When the spring breeze blows, the early plum blossoms in the courtyard respond to the breath of spring and bloom first. Attracted by the plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, apricot blossoms, peach blossoms, and pear blossoms bloom one after another, creating an instant opportunity for hundreds of flowers to bloom and spring to be full of joy. They are like officials of all sizes, bathed in the emperor's favor. However, there are still differences in the degree to which they are favored by the spring breeze, which is reflected in the order of flowering. A "step" vividly reflects the cumbersome and strict hierarchy of the human world. The last two sentences describe the shepherd's purse and elm pods in the deep village, cheering for the spring breeze. They are in the inaccessible deep alleys, as unnoticed as the lower class people. The shepherd's purse and the elm pod think that the spring breeze comes for them, which makes sense, because although the spring breeze is not impartial, it blows through every corner without exception; while the common people often even ignore the emperor's favor. You can't even enjoy the remnants of your saliva. In contrast, it shows the unfairness of the world. These two sentences empathize with objects and personify the object environment, making the ruthless natural scenery full of emotion, agile and vivid.

Bai Juyi's "Third of Eight Poems on Willow Branches" says: "Yiyi curls up again to become green, seducing the spring breeze with infinite emotion." The idea and technique are the same as the two sentences "Shepherd's purse". One writes about the graceful willow branches seduce the spring breeze, and the other writes about the shepherd's purse and elm pods welcoming the spring breeze. Both are based on the freehand brushwork of the spring breeze. They also endow things with emotion, and the scenery changes with the emotion. The writing is vivid and full of emotion. The artistic techniques used in this poem are natural, fresh, and easy to understand. They are all scenes that can be seen in spring. However, in this scene, the poet added his own perspective of viewing mood.

When the poet writes about the spring breeze, he does not write about the strength and direction of the wind, but about the changes after the wind blows, showing the function and characteristics of the spring breeze. The first is that all things are revived and the flowers are blooming. They all think that the wind comes just for themselves, using anthropomorphic techniques, which is lively and novel; the second is that the dynamics are complete, and the flowers bloom when the wind blows. The poet wrote seven kinds of plants, and they all bloom. This makes the poem simple but full of emotion. The scenery it depicts and the feelings it expresses are especially full of spring vitality.
