How to identify French wines by labels? Interpretation of the most complete classification of French wines in history
The first step is to look at the grade of the wine from the label. French law divides French wines into four grades:
1. Aoc of wine in legal producing areas
2. Excellent regional table wine VDQS
3. Regional table wine VIN DE PAYS
4. Daily table wine VIN DE TABLE
legally produced wine, called AOC for short, is the highest level of French wine.
AOC means "naming of origin control" in French.
The grape variety, planting quantity, brewing process and alcohol content in the region of origin must be certified by experts.
it can only be brewed from grapes grown in the country of origin, and it must not be blended with grape juice from other places.
AOC production accounts for about 35% of total French wine production.
the bottle label is labeled as Appellation+ name of producing area +Controlee. As shown in the attached figure:
Excellent regional table wine, the grade is referred to as VDQS.
is the level that table wine in ordinary areas must go through in the transition to AOC level. If the wine quality performs well during the VDQS period, it will be upgraded to AOC.
The output only accounts for 2% of the total French wine production.
the bottle label is labeled as Appellation+ name of producing area+qualitesuperior. As shown in the attached figure
wine of country
The best wine in daily table wine has been upgraded to regional table wine.
the label of regional table wine can indicate the producing area.
it can be blended with grape juice in the indicated producing area, but it is limited to grapes in this producing area.
the output accounts for about 15% of the total French wine production.
the label of the wine bottle is Vin de Pays+the name of the producing area
most of the regional table wines in France are produced in the southern Mediterranean coast.
wine of the table
is the lowest-grade wine for daily drinking.
It can be blended with grape juice from different regions. If grape juice is limited to various producing areas in France, it can be called French daily table wine.
do not use grape juice from countries outside Europe.
the output accounts for about 38% of the total French wine production.
the label of the wine bottle is Vin de Table.
second step, if it is AOC-grade wine, it can be subdivided into many grades
1. AOC of wine in legal producing areas means "naming by controlling the origin" in French, and the label of the wine bottle is labeled as Appellation+ producing area name +Controlee.
2. The smaller the producing area indicated by the producing area name, the better the wine quality.
For example, Bordeaux production area in Bordeaux can be subdivided into MEDOC sub-production area and GRAVE sub-production area, and there are many villages in MEDOC sub-production area, such as MARGAUX village, which contains several castles (Chateau in French), such as Chateau Lascombes.
the lowest level is the name of the big producing area AOC: for example, Appellation+ Bordeaux producing area +Controlee,
The second lowest level is the name of the secondary producing area AOC: such as Appellation+MEDOC secondary producing area +Controlee
The higher level is the name of the village AOC: such as Appellation+MARGAUX village +Controlee
The highest level is the name of the castle AOC: such as Appellation+CHATEAU Lascombes Castle +Controlee
