(Rosse, William Parsons, 3e earl of)
Irish astronomer. He was born in York, England, on June 17, 1800; he died in Cork, Ireland, on October 31, 1867. Ross was a true aristocrat. He graduated from Oxford University in 1822, spent the next twelve years in Parliament, and inherited his father's lands in 1841. In 1845, Ireland elected him to the House of Lords. Ross's passion (in fact, his obsession) was to build a giant reflecting telescope. He learned to polish metal reflectors himself and worked for many years starting in 1827. He gained experience in making a 36-inch machine, and finally built his dream instrument in 1845, a machine called "Leviathan" (Leviathan). It symbolizes the evil sea monster and is often used as a metaphor for giant objects in later generations, such as giant ocean ships, wealthy and powerful people, and so on. ------- Translator) 72-inch telescope. The cost was about three euros. This project is full of "Don Quixote" colors, because the weather conditions on his family's property in Ireland are so bad that it is rarely possible to use this cumbersome instrument. (It took four people to operate it.) Even so, Sir Ross was able to make some important observations. First, he was the first to identify the swirling shape of those cloud-like celestial bodies. About three-quarters of a century later, people clearly understood that they are independent galaxies like our Milky Way, many thousands of miles away from us. A hundred light years. In 1845 he detected the first spiral galaxy, and by 1850 he discovered 14 more. He also studied the irregular hazy spot numbered No. 1 on Messier's list of stars. He thought it looked like a happy crab, and gave it a name in 1848: Crab Star Go, a name that has been used to this day. This year Ross was elected to the Royal Society. In 1908, one of his grandsons dismantled the huge telescope, which had become dangerously rickety. It never really did much, but it added to the joy of life for Sir Ross. 2.
