Resume and cover letter writing (1)
In the traditional job-seeking channels, it is necessary to prepare resumes and cover letters. However, faced with thousands of resumes and cover letters, the average browsing time of the personnel department is only one to three minutes.
Therefore, how to stand out from many applicants and win favor depends on a person's education and ability. However, a well-designed and properly packaged resume, although it can't guarantee a job, is likely to make people feel refreshed and get an interview opportunity. Even in the new era, a concise and powerful resume is still one of the indispensable and important materials for individuals to pay attention to interpersonal network, volunteer service and active visit.
There is no strict format requirement for writing resumes and cover letters, but basically some important information should be handled properly. For various formats or writing methods of resumes and cover letters, please refer to related books further.
I. Resume
The main purpose of resume is to get an interview opportunity as a reference for the interview. Therefore, it is necessary to design one by one according to the job requirements and job hunting objectives, and express the cooperative relationship between personal academic experience and the job application in a simple and concise way.
1, preparation before writing resume:
(1) Written by a special person or by yourself: Although professional service companies with resumes are very popular at present, their knowledge of customers is limited due to the uneven quality of service personnel. In order to achieve the purpose of sales promotion, they tend to be exaggerated and flashy in writing, but the content is likely to be empty and unrealistic. Therefore, most experts encourage job seekers to design and write their own resumes.
On the one hand, we can re-select individual academic experience and expertise according to different job nature or job requirements, and design them one by one to meet the needs of each job application; Secondly, you can save a sum of money. A good resume is not achieved overnight, and it needs to be revised and screened again and again. Therefore, when preparing a resume, time is absolutely inevitable.
(2) Paper and printing equipment: All the papers in the resume are mainly pure white or light white with good quality, and the paper size is subject to the specification of 8.5x 1 1. Avoid using colored paper, for one thing, it is too tacky, and for the other, it is not easy to read. Cleanliness is the principle when editing and typing. It's easy to typeset computer documents recently, and it's easy to modify them later. It is an ideal tool for processing resume documents, but it should be printed with a laser printer. Needle printers are unsightly and should be avoided.
(3) Tone and language: The language should be as plain and concise as possible, without boasting or exaggerating, but you should reveal your confidence and personal talent between the lines.
2. The main contents of the resume:
(1) name, address and telephone number: if there is no company residence or day and night, the name, address and telephone number should be placed in the center of the header (for example1); If there is a difference in place and time, the name should be listed in the center of the beginning, and the mailing address and telephone number should be placed in the upper left and right (Example 2).
Example 1:
Game mcguire
Green Street 1724
Indianapolis, 46204
(3 17)896-4289
Example 2:
Mary Jane doe
Home Address: School Address:
Hamilton Hall, 2340 Longfellow Street, R-226
California 90245 State University at Gondo, Else.
(2 13)555-6582 San Jose, California 94587
(408)555-5065
(3) Objectivity: This content depends on the situation. If the target of job hunting can be clearly defined, it is easy for employers to know whether job seekers are what they need. It's best to prepare multiple goals according to your own interests, and put only one goal in each resume to avoid too narrow a definition, so as not to lose opportunities. Human resources experts believe that unless you have a fairly certain understanding of the position, nature of work, place of work, nature of work and industry, you should add goals. Otherwise, if you are looking for a wide range of jobs and have uncertain interests, you'd better omit the target, so as not to lose other interview opportunities due to the limitation of writing.
(4) Education: list each degree, date of acquisition, school, department, excellent academic performance, and even list GPA, class ranking, or percentage. The general personnel supervisor thinks that only those with poor academic performance will be stupid and will not list their grades and rankings. If the professional performance is better than the overall average, and the major is closely related to the position applied for, it can be listed as follows:
Overall: GPA: 3.5 (based on 4.0)
Major: Economics. Average GPA: 3.85
Those who have a doctorate must also list the title of the doctoral thesis, the name of the instructor, and summarize the essence of the thesis in two or three lines. Honor and reward (honor &; Awards) can be listed in the category of "education" or broken down separately to show individual outstanding performance, which is also listed in reverse order.
(5) Work experience: the content should include the employer, location, professional title, working time (only one year or one month), position and work performance. At present, the worksheet is expressed in a quantitative way as far as possible, for example, the total output value should increase by 10%, and the principle should be honesty. When the team is finished, it should not take the credit for itself, and boasting is easy to be looked down upon. When describing, it is not necessary to express it in complete sentences, but to explain the work achievements, specific facts and so on. Start with an action verb (attachment 1). If you are still studying and have no employment experience, you should emphasize research results or extracurricular activities, work experience and so on.
(6) Other independent items: computer language expertise, familiarity with software and hardware equipment and other special skills. Or such as language ability (familiarity with various foreign languages, including listening, speaking, reading and writing), professional organizations or associations you join, and positions that can show your social activity, such as licenses, patents, special certificates, etc. , you can also list the date and unit of your award. As for important publications, if there are few, you can write them in your resume. However, in order to avoid too long a resume, many publications are usually attached to the resume in the form of attachments. Military service, whether compulsory or not, can be listed independently and dated or included in work experience.
(7) reference. Generally, only academic research needs to list the names, titles, contact numbers, addresses and other information of references in detail. Otherwise, if the applicant does not require it, it is unnecessary to take the initiative to attach it, so as not to cause adverse effects. When dealing with it, you only need to write at the end of your resume: the letter of introduction can be provided upon request, but there must be several referees in your heart to consult. In case of a talent-seeking unit, the referees must have a basic understanding of themselves, have a good impression and be willing to support them. Although a well-known person has influence, if he doesn't have positive support, it may be counterproductive, so he may not be the right person.
3. Resume format:
A good resume may not be universally applicable, but it can reflect personal characteristics and strive for interview opportunities. Some people's academic performance is better than their work experience, while others are the opposite, so the proportion of resume layout design is not the same. The more important it is in personal learning experience, the more it shows personal superiority, and the more it should be put in front. Those with good academic qualifications can give priority to academic level, but those with long graduation time seem to emphasize work experience more.
The format of resume can also be divided into two categories because of different personal use opportunities. One is temporal and the other is functional. The former lists the main contents of the resume item by item and flashbacks it according to time; The latter ignores the importance of time, reorganizes a work experience and classifies it into different skill items according to the arrangement and combination of skill items. Or you can keep the title of work experience, or use qualifications instead. Time sequence is no longer the standard of talent resume ranking. For example, Example 2 (Attachment 3) qualifications include communication skills, leadership skills, community and skills. These skills can be classified according to individual skill categories, and also according to the skills needed for the job, especially the common job requirements, such as leadership skills, writing skills and communication skills. Usually, four or six talents will be summarized under qualifications or skills, and three or four work achievements will be listed under each talent. The following is an analysis of the timing, advantages and disadvantages of the use of these two resumes:
First, the year order:
(1) Usage time:
A, personal career (or school) is quite continuous, there is no fact of continuous unemployment for more than one year, there is no semi-unemployment (that is, part-time job), and at the same time, continuous progress is made in work performance, which can be seen from the importance of job promotion and appointment. Employment is still stable, and there is no frequent job hopping and job change.
B, the current work experience or overall employment experience is closely related to the job hunting goal. Because the flashback description of work experience can let the employer know whether the applicant's current job nature is competent for the job and whether there is a tendency to change jobs.
At the same time, the overall work experience can show that the accumulation of professional knowledge and experience meets the requirements of work objectives, so it is very suitable for similar jobs.
(2) Advantages and disadvantages:
A. Advantages: For the personnel department, the resumes arranged in chronological order are gradual in time, easy to read and can easily judge the reputation of the applicant's previous service unit, and then infer whether the applicant's work performance is good or not. For job seekers, it is easier to write out the arrangement because the time sequence logic is clear.
B. Disadvantages: too much emphasis on personal progress and career continuity or stability will easily lead to the neglect of personal expertise, so it is impossible to highlight the correlation between personal talents and job applications when job-hopping. In addition, pay too much attention to the current experience and achievements. If the position you are applying for is related to early experience, it can't be shown in the chronological resume first. Moreover, the interruption of employment or underemployment can be seen at a glance in the time series, which has a bad influence on the evaluation of personal ability. Through the relationship between time and education, we can also infer the age of job hunting, and sometimes it will affect the interview opportunities.
B, only with type:
According to statistics, only 20%-25% of employers will accept this resume. Because this kind of resume is easily associated with unemployment, employment interruption or job change, there is no need to use chronological resume. Therefore, unless there are special factors, it is best to adopt the chronological form.
(1) Usage time:
When an individual is unemployed, semi-unemployed, needs to change jobs frequently, has no obvious progress in his career, and has no excellent academic experience or his current work experience does not match his work objectives, he may wish to consider using a talented resume to emphasize his overall expertise and qualifications.
(2) Advantages and disadvantages:
A, Advantages: In layout design, because it is not limited by time sequence (time can even be omitted), it is impossible to infer personal employment history, nor can it know the negative facts of unemployment or job-hopping, and it is not easy to infer age from it. At the same time, it emphasizes the relationship between personal qualifications, expertise and work objectives. Therefore, in the face of different job requirements, only the qualifications of expertise can be rearranged according to the degree of importance, so that they can be applied to multiple job applications and personal expertise can be paid more attention.
B. Disadvantages: It is easy to doubt the motivation of using this kind of resume, and it is not easy to read, which increases the space for subjective judgment and speculation by the personnel department.
4. Precautions:
(1) Length: The length of your resume should not exceed two pages. It would be better if you could express it clearly in one page, and the question "Who are you?" It should be fully explained in one or two pages. "What do you want to do? "and" what did you do? 」。
(2) Layout design: Use typing skills such as title, case, shading, underline, dot, asterisk (*) and indentation. Make the content clear at a glance, and the font size should be chosen properly. At the same time, the margins on both sides of the paper should be balanced, and it is not allowed to tilt left or right.
(3) Proofreading: Grammar, spelling and punctuation should be 100% accurate. It's best to ask school professionals (career consultants) or foreign friends with work experience to have a look and ask if there are any amendments or supplements.
(4) Organizational structure: When writing, be clear (the language is concise and related to the position), concise (try to express it in one or two pages) and powerful (the information conveyed is a powerful introduction to personal ability). Don't be too cumbersome and careless. But you can't be so poor that you regret losing your pearls. The ultimate goal is to arouse the reading interest of talent-seeking units.
(5) Wording: The word resume is unnecessary at the beginning of the paper. Explain that work performance is expressed in telex tone. There is no need to add a subject to a sentence, especially the subject "I", which is easy to be naive and superficial. Omitting "I" has become a common usage in resume writing.
(6) Photos shall not be pasted on the resume unless the applicant requests to attach them.
Resume and cover letter writing (2)
Second, Cover Letter (cover letter)
In the process of applying for a job, in addition to introducing yourself and promoting yourself with your resume, you still need to attach a cover letter to tell the job seeker your ability and willingness to apply for a job. Resume is the main part of job hunting, but a cover letter can make up for its shortcomings, thus making the finishing touch and icing on the cake. Therefore, some personal expertise or talents can not be fully displayed in the resume, and you can explain in detail through the cover letter, and the resume and cover letter complement each other to win the interview opportunity.
1. Format of cover letter:
(1) If it is a commercial document, the mailing address and date are on the upper right of the letterhead. Next, the top left is the name, title and address of the recipient (including the company name). The name and position of the recipient should be investigated clearly. If you are not sure, you can call the company switchboard and check the name of the person in charge of the selection, just Mr. Orms. (madam)
(2) honorific words: Dear Mr., Mrs. or Ms., address only by surname, without listing the full name (but it should be noted that when the addressee is mentioned above, the full name should be listed, that is, Mr. (first name)+(last name). This honorific must not be replaced by "who may be related to it" because the recipient is uncertain.
(3) Text: usually divided into three or four paragraphs, and based on the principle of one page, only two pages can be used unless necessary.
A. Paragraph 1: Explain the reason for writing this letter, and where you learned about this job (such as career center, placement office), newspaper, friends and teachers; What kind of position do you want to apply for, briefly introduce your qualifications and job requirements, and then explain your job objectives. However, it should be noted that the work objectives mentioned here should be consistent with those listed in the resume. For example:
Ms. Dorothy Jones of your department encouraged me to write to you and ask about the possibility of teaching in North Middle School after graduating from college. I will get a bachelor's degree from Indiana University in June this year. I want to teach in my hometown, Columbus, Ohio. (source: your job or graduate school search, P 19 1. )
B. Paragraph 2: Explain why you are interested in this job, why you think your qualifications meet the job requirements, and further elaborate your professional ability, work experience and courses to avoid repeating the terms in your resume. Example:
You will see from my resume that I have a strong quantitative background: advanced mathematics in high school and college 15 credits, including basic and advanced calculus, probability statistics, basic accounting, GPA:3.6. (Source: "Resume Writing", "Cover Letter", Princeton University Career Service Center, P 19. )
C. Paragraph 3: It is pointed out that the resume is attached for reference, and that the relevant qualifications and background of the individual are recorded in the resume. This paragraph can be long or short, or it can be compared with the previous paragraph (you can write your academic achievements in the previous paragraph), and then prove your work performance and show that your talents are needed for the position you are applying for. Example:
Enclosed please find my resume, detailing my background and qualifications.
Or the attachment will be independent of the first conclusion, and this paragraph only further explains the qualifications. In short, be sure to let the recipient know that the resume has been attached to the letter.
(4) Conclusion: I hope that the recipient will take some favorable actions after receiving it, such as providing an interview or telephone interview. Or more actively explain the meaning of telephone inquiry or visit.
Example 1: I'd be happy to meet you in (company name) and discuss career opportunities.
Ex. 2: I want to discuss career opportunities and my qualifications with you personally.
If you have the right place or time, you can ask the application results by phone or in person in a few days. Finally, you can add some polite words, such as: Thank you for your consideration or I am looking forward to our meeting.
Third, matters needing attention
1, each letter should be typed and printed in the original version, and cannot be replaced by a copy.
2. All sent letters should be copied for reference and reply.
3. The paper is mainly white and light white, and it is placed in an envelope with a size of 9- 10 inch.
Remember to sign at the end of the letter. It's better to write letters of different working nature separately, and don't replace them with drafts. However, if the work of the same nature is sent to different companies by letters with the same content, it is necessary to carefully check whether the company names on the letterhead, letters and envelopes are exactly the same to avoid mistakes.
5, the language is concise, avoid cliches and vague words, try to be plain and unpretentious, avoid the beginning of each paragraph with the subject "I", and the lines are full of confidence, but not exaggerated.
6. When sending a letter, avoid receiving it on Monday or Friday. If there is a closing date or a position advertised in the newspaper, send it as soon as possible to avoid the applicant being hired again after being filled.
7. After the job information is sent out, although it is rich and convincing, there is no guarantee that there will be an interview opportunity. However, if you still haven't received a reply within two weeks after mailing, you might as well call to ask about the application results to show your attention and positive attitude towards this matter.

Dear Mr Mandy,
In the March issue of New Changes in Manufacturing Industry. I saw your advertisement and looked for managers for your multi-million dollar factory expansion project. Please regard this letter as my application for the position of quality control supervisor.
At present, I am the assistant director of quality control in the engineering department of Barron Enterprise. I enjoy my work here, and I like it very much, but my wife and I want to move back to Indiana because my parents who live here are getting worse and worse.
The enclosed resume briefly outlines my training and experience. Since my first job in the second year of high school. I like working with any kind of machine. My strong interest in formal education and experience in various aspects of mechanical technology has given me a very valuable background for supervisors.
I would be happy to provide any additional information about my background or current job. My immediate supervisor at Barron Enterprise s knows that I am looking for a supervisor position in a company in the Midwest and why I am doing this. I want to have an interview with you, although distance is an important factor. If I am informed at least one week in advance, I will be glad to leave by plane at your convenience.
