The classic Chinese novel "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms" describes a story about Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei becoming sworn brothers in the Taoyuan. In the Tang Dynasty, more elaborate sworn worship ceremonies appeared again. "Yunxian Miscellaneous Notes" of the Tang Dynasty says: "One of Dai Hongzheng's close friends wrote on Bo slips and burned incense to inform his ancestors. He was named Jinlan Bo." Here, the "Jinlan Bo" that Dai refers to may be the "Jinlan Pu" It was an early prototype, but it was used to "burn incense to report to ancestors" and was not used as a certificate for mutual exchange. After it was clarified, a very elaborate ritual of sacrificial post exchange gradually formed among literati and officials. During the sworn ceremony, each person must write a written contract, usually using red paper folded into the size of an envelope and folded several times, with "Lanpu" or "Golden Orchid Pu" written on the cover, and his or her genealogy written inside. After worshiping their respective ancestors, they exchange this message with each other, and they will treat each other as brothers from now on. Ordinary people generally do not need to change their sworn vows. They usually inform each other of their names, ages, and birthdays and then treat each other as brothers.
