After the fall of the Qing Dynasty, why did the Manchu royal family continue to live in the Forbidden City. During the changes of dynasties, the royal family of the previous dynasty was generally exterminated, but the Manchu and Qing royal families received better treatment.
On October 10, 1911, the revolutionaries of the Eighth Battalion of the New Army Project fired the first shot of the Wuchang Uprising. On October 11 and 12, they captured Hanyang and Hankou. The rebel army took control of three towns in Wuhan and Hubei. The military government was established, Li Yuanhong was elected governor, and the country's name was changed to the Republic of China. Two months later, fifteen provinces including Hunan and Guangdong declared independence.
But in this incident, the Qing Dynasty also controlled the northern provinces of Hebei, Shandong, Zhili, and Manchuria and Mongolia, as well as Yuan Shikai's small station and new army. The south had no military advantage. It did not defect. Its leader, the bourgeois revolutionaries, had many weaknesses and mistakes. They did not put forward a thorough anti-imperialist and anti-feudal revolutionary program. They did not fully mobilize and rely on the people and did not have a strong core. Therefore, in order to To consolidate the achievements of the revolution, we secretly contacted Yuan Shikai and reached a private agreement. As long as you are willing to negotiate peace with us, once the revolution is peaceful, you can become the president, but you must allow the Qing Dynasty to abdicate and the Republic of China to rule.
During the period after the Wuchang Uprising, Queen Mother Longyu was helpless and weak. At that time, Yuan Shikai was the Prime Minister of the Cabinet and still had military and political power. He deliberately created a tense situation in which all sides were in danger and asked the court to provide money to support the military. He said: The lack of military pay would cause a rebellion in the army, so he asked Longyu to use 80,000 taels of internal funds to recharge. In exchange for military pay, Longyu had no choice but to agree. In January 1912, Yuan Shikai and the cabinet ministers jointly submitted a memorial requesting the Qing emperor to abdicate, proposing "democracy is like the abdication of Yao and Shun", demanding that the Qing emperor abdicate and implement a peaceful peace. But he said hypocritically: How could I, the Empress Dowager of the Qing Dynasty, bear to have the ancestors of the Nine Temples shocked by artillery fire, how could I bear to be expelled from the capital, and the regime to be violently overthrown? Longyu was deceived by Yuan Shikai's illusion and was at a loss as to what to do if there was no peace.

Yuan Shikai bribed some people in the palace to spread rumors that the revolutionaries were powerful and the northern army was no longer reliable! What else did they say: The provinces are seeking independence one after another. If they do not agree to their demands, the revolutionary army will reach Beijing, and the lives of the emperor and others will not be saved. The mediocre Longyu would only hug the little emperor and cry. Although the ministers of the imperial court also held a royal meeting, they did not come up with a solution and made a mess. Especially when Liangbi, the leader of the Zongshe Party, was bombed, the whole court was shocked. Yuan Shikai continued his campaign of forced uterus.
Long Yuji had no choice but to save his life. The fact that he could enjoy preferential treatment after abdicating the throne was much better than the end of the clan being destroyed. She had no choice but to praise Puyi, who was only 6 years old, for his decision to abdicate and promulgate peace. On February 3, 1912, Longyu authorized Yuan Shikai to negotiate with the South about the conditions for the Qing emperor's abdication. Longyu put forward three opinions: 1. The following ten words are left: "The titles of emperors of the Qing Dynasty are inherited and never replaced."
2. The word "abdication" is not used. three. The Imperial Palace and the Summer Palace are always at your disposal. The government and the Qing court signed the "Regulations on Preferential Treatment of the Royal Family". The last emperor still lived in the Forbidden City and retained a guard to protect the safety of the royal family. In order to maintain the normal operation of this small kingdom, the Republic of China government also promised to pay 4 million taels per year. Silver was at their disposal. Really, no one was killed and no one was arrested. All members of the royal family were not attacked.
On February 11, Longyu recognized the preferential treatment conditions and decided to issue an edict to abdicate.
On February 12, three edicts were issued in the name of the emperor: the abdication of the Qing emperor, the announcement of preferential treatment conditions, and the admonition to the subjects.
On this day, Yuan Shikai led all the ministers to the Yangxin Hall, and the eunuch presented the abdication edict to Longyu.
Everyone burst into tears and stamped the emperor's seal, and the ministers signed the edict in turn. The Qing Dynasty, which lasted for 267 years in China, perished in this way.
These Manchu nobles and elders continued to live in the Forbidden City. However, 7 years later, Feng Yuxiang revised the "Imperial Preferential Treatment Regulations", canceled Puyi's emperor title, and reduced the preferential treatment fees, but there was no crackdown. Revenge hurts these people.
