In the late Qing Dynasty, in Kuzhu Township, Taining County, there lived a resourceful and righteous Liu Xingzhi. He was once a county magistrate, but he retired from his hometown due to dissatisfaction with official corruption. This person often writes complaints to villagers and files lawsuits. His complaint secured the lawsuit. At that time, there was a bully in the village who did many evil things and acted recklessly. One day, he broke into a hundred homes and saw a pregnant woman who was bedridden; then he unscrupulously rummaged through boxes and cabinets to steal money; finally, he even didn't spare the pregnant woman, lifting the quilt and taking off the bracelet. The pregnant woman was frightened and shouted for help. At this time, the villagers came back from the market and heard the cry for help. Everyone rushed to the pregnant woman's house, caught the bully, and sent him to the county government office. The county magistrate immediately took the bully into custody and asked the pregnant woman's husband to file a petition. Her husband returned to the village and discussed it with everyone over and over again; I felt that the complaint must be well written and hit the key points in order to kill the bully; otherwise, the wolf would not die, but would suffer from it. So I invited a few scholars, lit a lamp, stayed up all night, and finally wrote the complaint; the signature was the bracelet that was taken away. The next day, the pregnant woman’s husband was about to submit a complaint to the county government; suddenly an elder in the village reminded me: Has the complaint been read to Mr. Liu? When the husband heard this, he quickly rented a carriage and walked dozens of miles to Master Liu's house. He took out the handwriting and asked Master Liu to read it. Mr. Liu asked about what happened in detail, then looked at the complaint and said thoughtfully: "You can write the complaint. If it is changed, I guarantee that he will not be able to get out of prison." Later he picked up the pen and changed the word "Tear off the bracelet" to "Tear off the bracelet" Tear off the bracelet. Her husband took the petition and went straight to the county government office for several days and presented it to the county government office. The county magistrate received the complaint and immediately interrogated the bully: Was the bracelet really taken away? It's true. Were pregnant women exposed? Yes. But if you lift the quilt with your bracelet, do you know your sin? Convicted. The bully confessed to all his crimes, no matter how serious they were. Then press your fingerprints. The magistrate laid down the complaint and asked him to have his fingerprints pressed. Then he said, "taking the bracelet to uncover the quilt" is punishable for two crimes, "taking the bracelet" and robbing property; "uncovering" is raping a pregnant woman; the circumstances are egregious and should be severely punished. Only then did people realize how much Master Liu had changed.
