Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908.8.27-1973.1.22) is the 42nd and 36th President of the United States. Johnson worked in a variety of careers after graduating from Southwest Normal University. He was elected to the Senate in 1948 and became the leader of the Democratic Party in 1951. In 1946, Nixon was elected as a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives and began to enter politics. In 1950, he was elected to the United States Senate. In 1952, as Eisenhower's running mate, he was elected Vice President of the United States. In 1956 he was re-elected as Vice President of the United States. In 1959, he was narrowly defeated by John F. Kennedy in the presidential election. After losing the election, Nixon worked as a lawyer in Los Angeles and New York.
In 1968, Nixon returned to politics. In the U.S. election that year, he defeated Democrat Humphrey and independent candidate Wallace and was elected as the 46th (37th) President of the United States. In January 1972, he was re-elected as the 47th president. In August 1974, he was forced to resign as president due to the "Watergate Incident".
President Carter
James Earl Carter, better known as Jimmy Carter, was born on October 1, 1924 in Plains, Georgia. From 1941 to 1943, he studied at Georgia Southwestern University and the Polytechnic Institute. In 1943, he entered the U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis Naval Academy) in Maryland and received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1947. Served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1953. After his father passed away in 1953, he retired and ran Carter Farm, Carter Warehouse and other businesses in his hometown, and was engaged in political activities. Served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher in the Southern Baptist Church.
He served as chairman of the Sumter County School Board in Georgia from 1955 to 1962, and as a Georgia state senator from 1962 to 1966. During this period, he also served as general manager of the Plains Development Corporation, the Sumter County Development Corporation, chairman of the West Central Georgia Planning and Development Commission, and the Georgia Improved Crops Association. He served as governor of Georgia from 1970 to 1974. In 1974, he served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee's Congressional Campaign Committee. In 1977, he became the 39th President of the United States. He failed to win re-election in 1980. He has been an emeritus professor at Emory University in Atlanta since 1982.
