Through archaeological excavation and research, it is known that there are 248 existing caves on the cliff surface in the north area, of which 243 are newly numbered caves. Together with 487 caves in the southern district, the total number of existing caves in Mogao Grottoes has increased to 735, basically restoring the original appearance of "more than a thousand caves" in the Tang Dynasty inscriptions.
