After Zhu Youjian ascended the throne, Yuan Chonghuan was reopened. In the second year of Chongzhen (1629), Huang taiji was repelled and the siege of the capital was lifted. Later, Wei Zhongxian and Dang Yu impeached Yuan Chonghuan on charges of "killing Dao Shuai (Mao Longwen)", "making peace with the Qing court" and "being enemies with Chengmi".
Huang taiji also took the opportunity to implement a double spy. Yuan Chonghuan was finally thought by Zhu Youjian to have a secret agreement with Houjin, and Yuan Chonghuan was arrested and imprisoned and sentenced to death for treason.
