Hangzhou Bird's Nest Daolin Zen Master ①, this county ② Fuyang people also. His surname is Pan Shi ... He became a monk at the age of nine and was ordained at the Guoyuan Temple in Jingzhou on the 21st ... Later, he saw a long pine tree in Qinwangshan (3), which was luxuriant in foliage and bent like a cover, and settled on it, so people called it the Bird's Nest Zen Master. There is a magpie nest beside it, which naturally tames people, and people are also monks in the magpie nest ... Yuan and Zhong ④ and Bai Juyi ⑤ assistant ministers left Shouzi County and went up the mountain to meet their teachers ⑤. Q: "The Zen master's residence is very dangerous." The teacher said, "Too defensive is especially dangerous!" Bai said, "I am a disciple of Jiangshan ⑥. What is the danger?" The teacher said: "There is more knowledge when the salary and fire intersect. Is it dangerous? " He asked, "What is the general idea of Buddhism?" The teacher said, "Don't be evil, do good. 9 "Bai said," A three-year-old child knows nothing. " The teacher said, "Although a three-year-old child knows the way, an 80-year-old man can't." Word annotation
① Daolin (735 ~ 833), a Buddhist monk, was born in Fuyang, Hangzhou. The common surname is Pan, whose legal name is Daolin. Born in the 23rd year of Tang Kaiyuan (735), he moved to Fuqing Baiyu (now Jiangyin Town) in his later years and died in the 7th year of Tang Dahe (833) at the age of 99. He has been a monk for more than 80 years.
② County: refers to Hangzhou. Hangzhou was called Qiantang County in Sui Dynasty and renamed Hangzhou in Tang Dynasty, but the old name was inherited here.
③ Qinwangshan: Located in the northeast of Leshan Village, Qiao Feng Town, Zhuji City, Zhejiang Province, it is a famous mountain in Huiji Mountain. The local name is "Yanzi Rock Head", also known as Stone Carving Mountain, which is named after the legend that Qin Shihuang carved stones in Huiji.
④ Yuan, medium: refers to the number of years and the middle of (805 ~ 820) years, that is, 8 10 to 8 15 years.
⑤ Bai Juyi (772 ~ 846): His real name was Lotte, his real name was Xiangshan Jushi, and his real name was Mr. Zuiyin. Originally from Taiyuan, Xinzheng, Henan. He is one of the three great poets in the Tang Dynasty. Bai Juyi and Yuan Zhen * * * advocated the new Yuefu movement, and together with Liu Yuxi, they called the world "Bai Yuan" and "Bai Liu".
Bai Juyi's poems have a wide range of themes, diverse forms and simple and popular language, and are known as "the poet's magic" and "the king of poets". Official to Hanlin bachelor, Zuo Zanshan doctor. In 846 AD, Bai Juyi died in Luoyang and was buried in Xiangshan. Up to now, there are Bai's "Changqing Collection", and the representative works include Song of Eternal Sorrow, Charcoal Man, Pipa Travel and so on.
From 822 to 825, Bai Juyi was appointed as the secretariat of Hangzhou and Suzhou. It was during this period that I had an exchange with Zen master Daolin in Bird Chu.
⑥ Visitor: refers to Bai Juyi's visit to Zen master Daolin in the Bird's Nest. Pay a visit Teacher, refers to Zen master Dowling in Bird's Nest. Because most of the narrators in the lamp records tell the story of Master for disciples, they often take Master as their teacher and preach the name of Master.
⑦ Town Jiangshan: It means an important position, guarding one side.
⑧ There is more than knowledge: the first four words "intersection of salary and fire" mean that confusion in reality is intertwined with inner troubles. The last four words "never stop knowing" continue to explain the previous scene, indicating that the inner desire is endless. Knowledge is people's understanding and judgment of the nature of things.
All evil should be done, and all good should be pursued: this sentence has many sources. It is generally believed that it comes from "Jia Agama", which is four sentences: "All evil must be done, and all good must be pursued. Self-purification is Buddhism. " The meaning is obvious, that is, Buddhist believers are required to do only good deeds, not evil deeds. If you purify your heart, you will be a true Buddhist. Of course, the "good" and "evil" here are only Buddhist standards. According to Zen's "non-good, non-evil and non-good", I don't stick to the viewpoint of binary opposition, but also do other theories.
Appreciate and explain
The first paragraph of this case is an introduction to the monk Daolin in Bird's Nest, which is a foreshadowing before the article enters the core. But this foundation is very important, just as indispensable as a ladder to climb stairs. Without this foreshadowing, Bai Juyi could not have been introduced later. At that time, Bai was not only a poet, but also an official who held the power of endogenous killing in his jurisdiction. When he went to "learn from the teacher in the mountains", he set off the unusual weight of the worshiped. At the beginning of the dialogue, Bai Juyi may have no deep meaning, but the Zen master's bird's nest deliberately touched it. Finally, when asked "the general idea of Buddhism" in vain, the Zen master gave the answer that "all evil should be done and all good should be pursued". But this is not the climax of this case, the climax lies in the last question and answer. Bai is not only an official, but also a learned man. He believes in Buddhism. Of course, he was not satisfied with Jackson Bird's boring answer and thought that "a three-year-old child can explain it". Aren't you giving me the runaround The Zen master went on to tell an ancient truth that shocked the Millennium: "Although a three-year-old child knows the truth, an 80-year-old man can't do it." Bai Juyi listened to this answer, but he couldn't speak. He just bowed out.
The inspiration of this case-solving to our descendants is to reflect on ourselves at all times. It's easy to shout those big and beautiful slogans, but it's hard to do it and stick to it. It is only because of its difficulty that it is valuable and respectable.
