During the Warring States, Qin and Han Dynasties, the world was divided into 36 counties, and Xuanhua belonged to Shanggu County. Wuzhou and Wende County were established in the early Tang Dynasty, and Fu Xuan Town in the Ming Dynasty was changed to Xuanhua Prefecture in Zhili in the Qing Dynasty. After liberation, it once belonged to Chahar Province, later renamed Xuanhua City, then to Hebei Province, until it was renamed as 1963, and now it belongs to Zhangjiakou City.
