Minjiang River flows through Aba Prefecture, Chengdu, Meishan, Leshan and Yibin City in Sichuan Province. Minjiang River is the most important water resource in Chengdu Plain. Historically, the Minjiang River irrigation project, represented by Dujiangyan, created the land of abundance in Chengdu Plain, Sichuan. After the founding of People's Republic of China (PRC), many water conservancy projects, especially hydropower projects, were built on its main tributaries, which provided great impetus for the economic and social development of the basin.

The total drop of Minjiang River is 3560m (2877m (▽ 3 143-▽ 266)), and the drainage area is 13588 1 square kilometer, of which 126280 square kilometer is in Sichuan.
