When it comes to municipalities directly under the central government, people will naturally think of Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Chongqing. However, there is more than one municipality directly under the central government in history.

In the early days of the founding of New China, there were 12 municipalities in China, namely Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Shenyang, Fushun, Anshan, Benxi, xi, Nanjing, Wuhan, Guangzhou and Chongqing.

However, after the administrative divisions of 1954 were adjusted, only Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin were retained. 1June 1997, Chongqing became a municipality directly under the central government for the third time in history.
