Tongli National Wetland Park is the only national wetland park in the Yangtze River Delta Ecological Green Integration Demonstration Zone, and it is also the national wetland park with the largest number of birds in Suzhou.
In 20 13, the establishment of national wetland park was officially started. After seven years of hard work, in June 2020, the park was officially awarded the National Wetland Park.
At the beginning of the planning and construction of the park, the protection and restoration of the protected areas were taken as the top priority. Focus on water system and water quality protection, waterfront protection, biodiversity and animal and plant habitats (habitats) protection, as well as water system consolidation and dredging, lake wetland ecological restoration, river ecological restoration, bird habitat restoration, artificial wetland restoration, garden ecological restoration and other restoration projects. In the core area of the park, in order not to affect the habitat of wildlife, there is not even a street lamp installed here. By the end of February, 202 1302 species of plants belonging to 92 families and 238 genera were found in the wetland park, and many key protected plants and endangered plants such as wild water shield, water fern, ginkgo biloba, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, wild water chestnut and Zelkova schneideriana were found. Abundant biological resources also provide places for migratory birds, especially waterfowl, to feed, inhabit and breed.
