From Wikipedia, a free encyclopedia.

Figure skating is an Olympic sport, in which individuals, couples or groups perform spinning, jumping, footwork and other complex and challenging movements on the ice. Figure skaters participate in competitions at all levels, from junior to Olympic (advanced), as well as local, national and international competitions. The International Skating Federation (ISU) manages international figure skating referees and competitions. Figure skating is an official event in the Winter Olympics. In languages other than English, figure skating is usually called artistic skating.

Major international competitions are approved by the International Skating Federation. These include the Winter Olympics, the World Championships, the World Youth Figure Skating Championships, the European Figure Skating Championships, the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships and the FIVB Figure Skating Grand Prix.

This sport is also related to the entertainment industry. Major competitions usually have performances at the end, and the top players in the performances will show their skills to the audience. During and after their competitive career, many skaters also skate in skating exhibitions or performances in competition season and non-competition season.
