Who invented PHS?
Xu Fuxin

Xu Fuxin of Yuhang Telecommunication Bureau is an old telecom director. 1970 After graduating from Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, I have been working in the telecommunications system and worked as a director for 18 years.

Xu Fuxin has deep feelings for telecommunications. Even when 1996 was transferred to Zhejiang Digital Mobile Company as the general manager, he still held the position he had held for more than ten years: director of Yuhang Telecom. At this time, the separation between telecom and mobile is an open secret in telecom, and he has been looking for the next business growth point for telecom.

1996 On a calm day, Xu Fuxin saw the Japanese PHS in a magazine and was inspired.

On the surface, it should be said that Japanese PHS has little to do with Xu Fuxin's desire to find business growth points for telecommunications. Because in Japan, mobile local calls are carried out as another kind of mobile communication, which has nothing to do with fixed telephone networks.

But Xu Fuxin saw a new thing, and he thought of grafting PHS to the fixed telephone network. With the developed network of China Telecom and PHS wireless technology at the front end, isn't it a small mobile phone built on the fixed network? Xu Fuxin was excited about his discovery. The following year, he went to Japan to inspect the PHS project as the leader of the China Expert Training Group of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.

It's still not easy to tell what PHS is. The first is wireless communication, but whether it belongs to fixed telephone or mobile phone, no one can tell. Xu Fuxin's idea is really wonderful. If we build another network for PHS in China, the cost will be very high and it may not be realized. But Xu Fuxin gave up the idea of building another network and built it on the fixed network of China Telecom. On the one hand, it reduces the cost; On the other hand, it found a promoter for PHS in China communication market from the very beginning: China Telecom. It's just that this idea has brought us some trouble in defining PHS, so we can only say that PHS is a wireless variant of fixed telephone.

PHS has always had a slogan in China: dial the mobile phone at the fixed-line price.

During the interview, the reporter calculated the price difference between PHS and GSM more than once: the call cost of PHS is 3 minutes 0.2 yuan, while the price of GSM mobile phone is 1 minute 0.5 yuan, and the price difference here is 7.5 times. In addition, PHS does not charge for incoming calls. I believe that the price difference between PHS and GSM should be about 10 times. For China people who have some money in their pockets but are definitely not rich, the price difference of 10 is no joke.

But it is an exaggeration to say that PHS is as easy to use as GSM mobile phones. Compared with the two, PHS has some insurmountable shortcomings: first, due to technical reasons, PHS can not be used at high speed, and the call quality will decline when the speed reaches a certain value (of course, the limit value has reached 100 km or more); Secondly, it can't roam and can't be used outside the local area; In addition, the PHS network sometimes has a weak signal and often needs to go out of the house to make a phone call.
