First, the characteristics of the variety itself (1) are firstly the growth habits of the variety. According to different growth habits, tomatoes can be divided into two types: one is infinite growth type, the first inflorescence appears around 9 ~ 12 leaves, and then an inflorescence appears every 3 ~ 4 leaves. If the growth conditions permit, this kind of plants can grow all the time, and their terminal buds are leaf buds. The second type is restricted growth type. The first inflorescence appears around the 6th or 7th leaf, and then one inflorescence appears every 1-2 leaves. After several inflorescences appear on the main branches, they no longer grow, and the terminal buds are flower buds. The restricted growth type of tomato can be divided into two types: low crown type and high crown type. The main branches of short-crowned varieties are covered after 2 ~ 3 inflorescences, and the main branches of high-crowned varieties are covered after 4 ~ 6 inflorescences (Figure 1). The difference of growth habits is related to the maturity of varieties. Generally, infinite varieties are relatively late, and limited varieties, especially short-crowned varieties, mature earlier, but the yield of infinite varieties is generally higher.
2. Variety type and fruit size. At present, all tomato varieties cultivated in production belong to common tomatoes, most of which belong to common tomato varieties of cultivated subspecies, and a few varieties belong to cherry tomato varieties of semi-cultivated subspecies, which are usually called "cherry tomatoes". Cherry tomatoes have smaller fruit shape, longer growth period and lower yield. At present, the planting area is small, mainly supplying hotels and restaurants. However, among the common tomato varieties, according to the fruit size, they can be divided into large fruit varieties, medium fruit varieties and small fruit varieties. Usually cultivated tomato varieties belong to large fruit type or medium fruit type, and medium fruit type and small fruit type are the main types in Hong Kong and Macao.
Third, the color of the fruit. Among the tomato varieties cultivated at present, the color of tomato fruit can be basically divided into red and pink. Different regions have different requirements for the color of tomato fruit. For example, pink tomato varieties are generally needed in Northeast China and Shanghai. At the same time, there are also differences in the requirements of tomato fruit coloring consistency in different regions. Some areas like varieties with green fruit shoulders, while others need varieties with the same color.
