What is the "Gu Hai Incident"
Gu Hai Hui uprising is also called "Gu Hai Incident" and "Gu Hai Peasant Riot". From June of 1939 to June of 194 1, the Hui people living in Guyuan area of Ningxia today could not bear the cruel exploitation and ethnic discrimination of the Kuomintang, and held three large-scale armed uprisings in succession. It has spread to eight nearby counties, including Longde, Jingning, Huining, Huaping (now Jingyuan), Sol Zhang, Zhuanglang, Huating and Qin 'an. The lineup reached 20,000 at its peak. Under the leadership of Ma, Ma Wang, Ma and Ma Siyi, the peasant uprising fought bravely against the Kuomintang regular army and local armed forces with broadswords, spears and axes, wiped out more than 2,000 enemy troops and seized more than 0/000 pieces of various light and heavy weapons. The insurgents also put forward political slogans with historical and progressive significance, such as "opposing Chiang Kai-shek and resisting Japan" and "harmony among the five ethnic groups". 194 1 after the failure of the third uprising in may and June, more than 220 insurgents broke through and went to the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia border region to form the first armed force of the northwest Hui people-the Hui cavalry regiment.
