Ted talk: why did a healthy lifestyle almost kill me?
In the past 10 years, I have been in sadness and humiliation, expecting a good reason to change myself, and this reason is self-improvement. So I started from three aspects. First, start with ideas. I decided to try to be smart. For example, I read the Encyclopedia Britannica from beginning to end, or I read the first word "a-ak" to the last word "Zywiec". I don't really remember now. This has been an incredible year. The whole process is very attractive and sometimes painful, especially for the people around me. Whenever I add some facts that have nothing to do with the conversation I read in the Encyclopedia Britannica, my wife will fine me a dollar, so there is also a bad side, but after that, I decided to work hard mentally. As I inspired last year, I grew up without any religious beliefs. I'm Jewish, but I'm Jewish just like the Olive Garden is Italian. (Laughter) Not really. But I decided to learn the Bible and my traditions through real diving, and try to live in it and immerse myself in it. So I decided to follow all the rules of the Bible. From the Ten Commandments to growing a beard-because Leviticus says you can't shave. This is what I look like in the end. Thank you for your reaction. I look a bit like Moses, Kaczynski said. I have both. So there is a botanical garden there. And that sheep. But after that, I decided to do something spiritual. As I mentioned last year, I have no religious belief since I was a child. I'm Jewish. I like Italian food cooked by American Olive Garden Restaurant, unlike traditional Jews. I really didn't, but I decided to learn about the Bible and Jewish traditional culture, and let myself fully integrate into that environment through real integration. So I decided to follow all the rules of the Bible, from the Ten Commandments to growing a beard-this is what I look like in the end because Leviticus asks people not to remove their beards. Thank you for your reaction. I look a bit like Moses, or Ted Kaczynski. They both look alike. This has been trimmed. This is a sheep. Now, the last part of the trilogy is that I want to focus on my body and try to be the healthiest person, the healthiest person alive. This is what I have been doing for the past few years. I just finished it a few months ago I have to say, thank god. Because such a healthy life makes me miserable. (Laughter) It's unbearable, because you have so many things to do that it's unbelievable. I listened to the opinions of all experts and talked with a medical advisory committee. They told me everything I had to do. I must eat properly, exercise, meditate and keep a pet dog, because it can lower my blood pressure. I wrote this book on the treadmill. It took me about 1000 miles to write this book. I have to put on sunscreen. This is quite a feat, because if you listen to the dermatologist, you should have a glass full of sunscreen. You must reapply it every two to four hours. So I think half of my books are about sunscreen. For most of the year, I'm like a doughnut coated with syrup. Wash your hands. I must do that correctly. My immunologist told me that I should also wipe all the remote controls and iPhones in my house. The last step is that I want to pay attention to my body, achieve the healthiest state as possible and become the healthiest person in the world, so I have been doing those things just mentioned in the past few years, and I just stopped a few months ago. I must say, thank God it's finally over, because that healthy lifestyle is torturing me. This is unbearable, because you have too many things to do, and the number is unbelievable. I have listened to the opinions of all experts and talked with many medical consultants. They told me that I must eat properly, exercise, meditate and keep pets, because that can lower my blood pressure. I write a book on the treadmill. I ran nearly 1000 km for this book. I must wear sunscreen. This is a big project, because if you strictly follow the doctor's advice, the dermatologist will tell you that you should prepare a full cup of sunscreen and apply it again every 2-4 hours. So I think the first half of my book is about sunscreen. As for washing hands, I must wash them correctly. The immunologist told me that I must carefully wipe all the remote controls and iPhone at home, because they breed a lot of bacteria, which takes me a lot of time. Because that's part of health. I was inspired by the Danish Safety Committee. They launched a public campaign and said, "Walking helmet is a good helmet." Therefore, they think that you should not only ride a bike with a helmet, but also walk with it. You can see them shopping with helmets. Yes, I tried. It's a little extreme now, I admit it. But if you think about it, this is actually-written by the author of Devil's Economics-more people die from drunk walking than from drunk driving per mile, so if you have had a few drinks, think about it tonight. I also try to be the safest person, because this is also a part of health. I was inspired by the Danish Safety Committee, and they launched a public welfare activity with the slogan: "A special helmet for walking is a good helmet". They think it is necessary to wear a helmet not only when riding a bike, but also when walking. As you can see, they even wear helmets when shopping. Well, I've tried, and I admit it seems a bit extreme, but if you think about it, it's actually because-the author of Devil Economics wrote-on a mile basis, more people die from drunk walking than from drunk driving. If you are married, you should think about it. So I finished, in a sense, it was successful. All the marks point in the right direction. My cholesterol dropped and I lost weight. My wife stopped telling me that I looked pregnant. So that's good. Generally speaking, it is successful. But I also know that I am too healthy, which is unhealthy. I was so absorbed in doing these things that I neglected my friends and family. As Dan Bitner said, having a strong social network is so cruel to our health. So I finished these things, which was successful to some extent, and all the indicators became normal. My cholesterol has dropped, I have lost weight, and my wife doesn't say that I look like a pregnant woman, which is great and successful on the whole. But I also realize that I am too healthy, which is unhealthy in itself. I was so focused on doing those things that I neglected my friends and family. As Dan Butner told us, having a wide range of social networks is very important for our health. So I finished. The week after the project ended, I went a little too far. I went to the dark side. I just indulged myself. It's like something in a Rygula. There's no sex part. Because I have three children, that won't happen. But overeating is certain. I finally settled down. So now I'm back to adopting many-not all; I don't wear a helmet anymore-but I have adopted dozens of healthy behaviors in this year. This is really a life-changing project. Of course, I don't have time to tell them all. Let me tell you both quickly. So I stopped these health plans. After a week's suspension of the health plan, I let myself indulge a little and started an unhealthy lifestyle. Indulge yourself, a bit like in Romance of the Roman Empire. Of course, there is no part about sex here, because I already have three children, so it's not what you think. But eating and drinking is certain, and finally stabilized. Now I am back to my old self. I kept many of the methods I tried last year-of course not all. I no longer wear a helmet, but I still maintain many healthy living habits. This is really a plan that can change my life. Of course, I don't have enough time to experience them all. I just want to tell you two things briefly. The first one is-this surprises me. I didn't expect this to happen-but I live a much quieter life now. Because we live in such a noisy world. There are trains, planes, cars and Bill O'Reilly. He is very noisy. This is a really underestimated health hazard-not only because it damages our hearing, which is obvious, but also because it actually triggers a fight-or-flight response. A loud noise will make you fight or flee. Over the years, it will cause real damage, cardiovascular damage. The World Health Organization has just done a large-scale study and published it this year. This was done in Europe. They estimate that in Europe, 65,438+600,000 years of healthy life are lost every year because of noise. So they think it's actually dead. First of all, this is a surprise, which I didn't expect before, but now I have a quieter life. We live in a noisy world, full of trains, planes, cars and Bill O'Reilly. He is too noisy. This is indeed an underestimated and neglected health hazard-not only because it is harmful to hearing, there is no doubt about it, but also because it actually leads to the psychological emergency mechanism of "attack or flight". High decibel noise will make you start the emergency mechanism, causing real damage, cardiovascular damage for several years. The World Health Organization conducted a large-scale study and published it this year. This study was conducted in Europe. They predict that the healthy lifestyle formed by human beings in the past 6.5438+600,000 years is decreasing year by year in Europe, which is precisely because of noise pollution. They think that noise pollution is really deadly. By the way, it's also bad for your brain. It will really damage cognition. Our founding fathers knew this. When they wrote the constitution, they scattered mud all over the pebbles outside the hall so that they could concentrate. So without noise reduction technology, our country would not exist. So as a patriot, I think it is very important-I wear all earplugs and headphones, which really improves my life in a surprising and unexpected way. At the same time, it is also very harmful to the human brain, and noise pollution will damage cognitive ability. Our founding fathers realized this. When they made the constitution, they covered the pebbles outside the White House with mud, so that they could concentrate, so there was no silencing technology. Our country would not exist. As a patriot, I think this is very important. I wear earplugs and headphones, which are really helpful to my life. To my surprise, this is beyond my expectation. The second and final point I want to say is that happiness is so important to your health that few of these behaviors will keep me going unless there are some feelings of pleasure and happiness. Give an example: food. The junk food industry is really good at pressing our happy button and finding out what is the happiest. But I think we can use their technology and apply it to healthy food. To give just one example, we like the crispy taste. So I have basically tried to incorporate crispness into my diet-adding some sunflower seeds. You can almost fool yourself into thinking that you are eating tacos. (Laughter) It makes me a healthy person. The second and final point I want to say is actually the theme of TEDMED-happiness is very important to people's health. If it were not for these behaviors, it would bring me a feeling of happiness and pleasure. It's hard for me to stick to it. For example, the food and junk food industries are particularly good at opening up our sense of pleasure and bringing us the happiest feeling, but I think we can put their technology. For example, we like the crispy taste, so I try to add it to many of my recipes-for example, put some sunflower seeds in it, and you will have the same taste as eating Doritos (cornflakes). (Laughter) This makes me healthier. I see. The book about it will be published in April. It's called "die healthy". I hope I won't get sick when I sell books on tour. This is my best hope. That's it. This book was published in April, and its title is Don't blindly pursue health. I hope I won't get sick when I promote the new book. This is my greatest wish. So thank you very much. (Applause)
