Tangshan is a city made of hot molten iron. In the past, China's steel output ranked first in the world, second in Hebei, third in Tangshan and fourth in the United States. The earliest modern coal mine, cement plant and train factory in China were also born here, where the best universities in China stand and the best engineers in China are trained.

Some people say that the first impression of Tangshan's mediocrity mainly comes from the appearance of the city. Large areas of low and repetitive buildings are distributed on the flat North China Plain. If Tangshan's urban construction has any characteristics, it is probably gone.

Because buildings are generally not high, someone once described Tangshan as a "crawling city". Others say that from high altitude, those flat buildings composed of gray, yellow and white are like neatly arranged matchboxes.
