Qinghai Lake is located in the northeast of Qinghai Province, 50 kilometers away from the provincial capital Xining196 meters above sea level, with an average water depth of 17.6 meters. It is the largest inland saltwater lake in China. ?
Qinghai Lake was called Xihai and Hai Xian in ancient times, and Hai Xian in Han Dynasty. It was renamed Qinghai in the Northern Wei Dynasty. Qinghai Lake is called Cuowumbu in Tibetan and Kukunod in Mongolian, which means "blue lake". ?
Qinghai Lake is vast and magnificent, and it is a huge mirror given by nature to Qinghai Plateau. Located in the northeast of Qinghai Plateau, Qinghai Lake is surrounded by four towering mountains: the majestic Datong Mountain in the north, the majestic Sun and Moon Mountain in the east, the rolling Nanshan Mountain in Qinghai in the south and the majestic Rubber Mountain in the west. The mountains are like four high natural barriers.
From the foot of the mountain to the lake, there is a vast, flat and boundless grassland. The Qinghai Lake with vast smoke and rippling blue waves is like a huge jade plate embedded between mountains and grasslands, forming a magnificent scenery in which mountains, lakes and grasslands set each other off. ?
It is generally believed that Qinghai Lake was formed in the Middle Pleistocene, when it was an outflow freshwater lake. After crossing the Bison Mountain through the Daotang River in the southeast, it connects with the Qunnai River and flows into the Yellow River. At the beginning of the late Pleistocene, the crustal uplift in the eastern part of the lake basin changed the Daotang River from an outflow river to an inflow river, and then the Daotang River flowed into Qinghai Lake and evolved into an inland closed lake.
In the northwest corner of Qinghai Lake, not far from the Buha River Delta, the largest river entering the lake, there are two islands of different sizes and shapes, one east and one west, facing each other from left to right. Seen from a distance, these two islands are like a pair of twin sisters living together, standing opposite each other by the lake and looking into the distance. These two beautiful islands are the world-famous Bird Island (named after hundreds of thousands of migratory birds inhabiting the island). ?
Every spring, striped geese and brown-necked gulls come here together and occupy one side of the island to nest. There are countless nests on the island during the spawning season. Bird Island has a huge stone that stands in the lake. This is the famous "Cormorant Kingdom". Cormorants nest on rocky cliffs, large and small, like a castle for birds.
Bird Island has become an ideal home for birds to thrive, mainly due to its unique geographical conditions and natural environment. The terrain here is flat, the climate is mild, the water plants are lush, and there are many fish. Those birds with unique eyes choose different landforms and ecological environments here to build their homes according to their habits and hobbies. ?
Haixinshan, commonly known as the island in the lake, was called Xianshan or Longju Island in ancient times. It is located in the south of Qinghai Lake, about 30 kilometers from the south bank. The whole island is 2300 meters long from east to west and 800 meters wide from north to south, shaped like a snail's shell.
Haixinshan is composed of granite and gneiss, slightly milky white, which was formed in Triassic 200 million years ago. Haixinshan is relatively flat, with rugged rocks, sandbars and overgrown weeds. There is a kind of flower called Buddha flower, which is purple in color, shaped like a corn poppy and leaves like roses. ?
It blooms in April of the lunar calendar every year, and its fragrance is attractive. In addition, a large number of fine grass such as wild onion and crested grass grow on the island. Every summer, the island is lush with water plants and beautiful scenery, making it an ideal natural pasture.
