Recently, I bought a new book, The Simple Life. After reading it carefully, I have many feelings, especially the following points.
First, in the era of knowledge economy, once-rule is stronger than all classics.
The book mentions many times the experience of buying books with friends. Teacher Yu claimed to have read 800 books in college, and Mr. Yu even had 60 thousand books. They are not only addicted to books, but more importantly, once they read widely, they can specialize in English, that is, they are not eclectic about English. The reason why New Oriental can become an enterprise with short growth time and long vitality is inseparable from the extensive knowledge of these scholars. Moreover, the spirit of New Oriental people who are eager to learn, willing to learn and good at learning has attracted a large number of experts and scholars at home and abroad. Therefore, it is not so much English that has changed Yu's fate as its studious spirit. Let's remember his famous saying: "What's the difference between forgetting after reading a book and not reading it?" Actually, it's completely different. Just like falling in love, a person who has been in love and then becomes a bachelor is more confident than a bachelor who has never been in love. ①"
But now the social division of labor is becoming more and more detailed. In the university stage, we should not only know everything, but also have the determination to cure it. The so-called "one trick, eat all over the world, apply what you have learned" will be useful to society. Specializing, you will definitely find a social position that suits you. In his book, he mentioned the story of a Vietnamese expert and an expert specializing in Chiang Kai-shek, which proved that it is difficult for people who know everything to make a breakthrough in their careers.
Second: reading changes fate, and inferiority is a good steel quenching.
Just like the scene mentioned in the book My Success Can Be Replicated that I read a few days ago, another intellectual hero Yu also had an experience of picking up bricks. It was to build a new house for my brother, and seemingly unrelated half bricks were picked up one by one, gradually forming a unique landscape in the corner of Yu Jia. Imagine two people pushing a unicycle and wandering on the way to school, home and picking bricks. It is difficult for us to compare them with a person who entered Peking University and Beijing Post a few years later, but a college entrance examination finally linked them together. Although Yu took the exam three times, he finally succeeded.
During his three years in Peking University, he didn't completely keep up with the rhythm of Peking University. I admit that he felt very inferior for a while. There are two reasons: poor Mandarin and nonstandard English pronunciation. In his own words, it is "the feeling of a small rural terrapin entering the Dragon Palace". It was not until the last year of college that he was treated in the tuberculosis hospital that he realized what the true meaning of life was. He said: "Self-confidence that has not experienced deep inferiority is false self-confidence." So he rose from inferiority complex, as he said, "A person's growth needs two conditions, one is to give enough time, and the other is to never extinguish his enthusiasm for life. (4) "Mr. Yu, this good steel must be quenched and forged with inferior quality.
Third: Never judge your future by your present situation.
Teacher Yu mentioned many examples of diligence and inspiration in the book. For example, a poor student asked Yu to give him a job as a cleaner in New Oriental to help him study. Teacher Yu not only gave him the job, but also promised that if he studied well, his salary would double. As a result, the poor student who didn't even have a tape recorder won the respect of others by his own efforts, and finally graduated from New Oriental with excellent results and won a full scholarship from Yale University in the United States.
I thought of my classmates. One day, we rode home from school to play ball. He pointed to his rusty bike and said, "I ride this bike to do business, from east to west." We are speechless. Bicycles are still worn-out bicycles, and others have become the business director of a large communication enterprise. I think no one can predict what the future will be like when riding a bicycle through this small northern town.
Therefore, people should take a long-term view instead of just staring at their toes, excluding some irrelevant interference factors and pursuing distant dreams. As Yu said in his book, only two kinds of animals can reach the top of the pyramid, one is the eagle and the other is the snail. With lofty ideals, even if you are a slow snail, why not?
