Now let’s take a look at the rise and fall of English pronunciation and intonation:
Intonation, that is, the tone of speaking, is the combination of the pitch (pitch) in a sentence. and changes. There is no language in the world that is spoken with a single tone. Taking English as an example, English has five basic intonations: rising tone (↗), falling tone (↙), rising and falling tone (∧), falling tone. tone (∨) and flat tone (→).
In addition to lexical meaning, a sentence also has intonation meaning. The so-called lexical meaning is the meaning of the words used in the words, and the intonation meaning is the attitude or tone expressed by the speaker's intonation.
The complete meaning of a sentence is the lexical meaning plus the intonation meaning. The same sentence with different intonations will have different meanings, sometimes even thousands of miles apart. Please see the following example:
1) A: Jean, can you bring me the newspaper? B: Sorry? (↗).
Jean said "Sorry" in a rising tone, which means "I didn't hear you. Could you say that again, please?"
2) A: Jean, can you bring me the newspaper? B: Sorry. (↙).
In dialogue 2), Jean said "Sorry" in a falling tone, which obviously meant refusing help or being helpless.
For us English learners, it is very important to understand a certain attitude or tone expressed by a certain tone. In fact, whether in real life or in an exam, the speaker's attitude, feelings, tone and intention cannot be determined due to lack of understanding.
