Never forget the kindness and help you receive from others.

Do not deceive the good and fear the evil.

Mercy helps orphans, widows, and those in need.

Do not help the strong to bully the weak.

Don’t forget the old friendship.

Always do things that benefit the public welfare.

Don’t talk too much and don’t lie.

Always talk about good deeds and the good qualities of others.

When an old friend is in trouble, try your best to help. If you do the above thirty-six items, you will be able to be a great minister in the future (or the next life) and live a long and happy life. If you don't do it completely, you will have good fortune and bad fortune; the less you do, the worse your fortune will be. Those who can do thirty things can be promoted to governor (equivalent to the modern provincial chairman), those who can do more than ten can be county magistrates or assistant officers, and those who can do five or seven can also become rich. (Translated from page 26 of "Destiny is in Your Heart") The first chapter of the stanza is about benevolence, which can instantly change poverty. Pei Du was a native of the Tang Dynasty. When he was young, he was impoverished and made a living by teaching in a private school in the countryside. Although his knowledge was profound, he was unfortunately unlucky and failed in many attempts.

One day, he walked down the street and passed a monastery, where he saw Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh looking at people. He waited until everyone had left before asking for advice on his face. Thich Nhat Hanh looked at you for a long time and said, "You are born with a lowly appearance. Not only do you have no hope of getting any fame in this life, but you also have an exaggerated vision and lines running down your face. You have the appearance of begging for food on the streets and dying of hunger! I don't think you should take the exam!"

Pei Du felt very sad after hearing this. He was dejected all day long and was listless even in teaching.

A few days later, Pei Du went for a walk at Xiangshan Temple and saw a woman kneeling in front of the Buddha, muttering a prayer, and leaving in a hurry after finishing her prayer. Pei Du saw a baggage on the desk. When he unwrapped it, he found that it was a very valuable item, a jade belt and two rhinoceros belts. He thought: This must belong to the woman just now, so he sat and waited for the owner.

At four o'clock in the afternoon, the woman was sweating profusely and panting. She hurried in, glanced at the desk, and burst into tears.

Pei Du came up to ask her, and the woman cried and said, "My father is seriously ill and his family property has been wiped out. Yesterday I invited a famous doctor and he got a little better. So this morning, I rushed to my relatives' house to borrow some money." I came to a jade belt and prepared to pledge it to borrow money to pay for medical expenses.

I was passing by this temple and stopped in to pray. Unexpectedly, I was in a hurry and forgot to take my jade belt with me. When I got to Dian, I discovered that I had lost my jade belt. I have no money, so my father will definitely not be able to survive. I still have my mother and younger siblings to support. I don’t know what to do! After saying that, he started crying again.

Pei Du presented the restored object, and the woman thanked him and left.

On his way home, Pei Du met Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh again. After walking a few steps away, Thich Nhat Hanh called Pei Du to turn around and said to him: "You must have done a great deed. I see your appearance. The snake entrance has become a jade belt pattern. Not only will you not starve to death, but you will also be able to do it in the future." There will be immeasurable blessings, and you may be able to achieve great success!"

Pei Du was afraid of Master Thich Nhat Hanh's sarcasm, so he replied: "You love joking! Why is Master Thich Nhat Hanh inconsistent in his words?"

Pei Du was afraid of Master Thich Nhat Hanh's sarcasm. The Zen master replied: "A body that is seven feet long is not as good as a face that is one foot long, a face that is one foot long is not as good as a nose that is three inches long, and a nose that is three inches long is not as good as a little heart!"

Pei Du said with a smile. : "How do human beings look at each other?"

Thich Nhat Hanh replied: "To know the will of heaven, you must get it from the clouds; to know the inner affairs of the heart, you must discern the look in the eyes. You have accumulated negative virtues and your eyes are not floating. Purple energy penetrates the eyes, the lines at the corners of the mouth grow longer than the Pichi area, and the beard becomes even and beautiful. After practicing Yin De, the appearance of your face will change, and you will undoubtedly enjoy extremely precious blessings."

That year, Pei Du passed the Jinshi examination. Due to his successful official career, more than ten years later, he was promoted to "Boban Bachelor" (equivalent to today's deputy executive dean). Soon, he was promoted to as prime minister. The process of his promotion to Prime Minister was very tortuous:

Pei Du initially went to Caizhou as an envoy under the order of the imperial court to announce the decree to the armies. After returning to the imperial court, Pei Du submitted a report to the imperial court to capture the rebels. pleading.

Rebels such as Wang Chengzong and Li Shidao plotted to hinder Caizhou's reinforcements, so they secretly lurked in the capital, assassinated powerful ministers, and killed Prime Minister Wu Yuanheng. They attacked Pei Du three times with swords. The first sword cut off his shoelaces, the second sword stabbed Pei Du in the back but only scratched his underwear, and the third sword slightly stabbed Pei Du in the head. It happened that he was wearing a felt hat, so the sword wound was not deep. When the rebels were chasing Pei Du, Wang Yi, one of Pei Du's followers, caught the rebel and shouted. The rebel turned around and cut off Wang Yi's hand with a knife, so that Pei Du could escape. Because Pei Du fled too hastily, he accidentally fell into a ravine. The rebels thought Pei Du was dead, so they left.

The emperor said: "Pei Du was able to escape from danger, it was all God's will (actually it was his blessing)!" So he ordered Pei Du to be the "Huaixi Recruitment Envoy", and quelled the civil strife in Huaixi. He was also named the "Gong of the State of Jin" and was often sent as envoys to border countries. The rulers of the Si Yi people would definitely ask about Pei Du's age and appearance. This shows how much the Chinese and Yi people awe and admire him!

Pei Du served the four emperors and always showed good moral character. He had five sons, all of whom were knighted by the court. ("Book of Tang" "Pei Du's Biography")

(Commentary) Pei Du found a valuable jade belt in Xiangshan Temple. When he saw the woman who had lost the jade belt coming, he returned the jade belt to her. The woman was so moved that she shed tears and thanked him. Pei Du smiled and said, "You should go back as soon as possible to save your father!" Later, a person who was proficient in physiognomy and numerology told him: "Your Excellency has accumulated evil virtues and has a bright future, which is beyond my control." Predicted!"

Pei Du met the rebels and was hacked to death three times. Isn't this what Han Yu said: "The thieves can't be killed because God is supporting them?" In fact, this It is precisely due to Pei Du's good moral character.

Why did Pei Du's return of his jade belt turn his short life into long life, turn poverty into wealth, and receive such great blessings?

Because the difference between a gentleman and a villain is greed. Pei Du has a relatively pure heart. Not only is he indifferent to the valuables lost by others, but he can also ignore issues of life and death. His mind is broad, so his merit is also vast. If he really returns other people's relics and is always grateful that he has good virtues, and even boasts to others, then the blessings he will receive will be very small. (Volume 3 of "Historical Induction and Statistics", page 122) Giving up money to help others, the evil omen disappears. During the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, there was a very famous fortune teller in Hangzhou named Chen Qi. Because his physiognomy was so effective, everyone gave him the nickname "Ghost Eye Seven".

At that time, there was a wealthy businessman named Xue Er in Hangzhou. He invited two friends to see the photoshoot.

"Ghost Eye Seven" The fortune teller said to Xue Er's first friend: "You will be promoted in the autumn!" The second friend said: "You will get rich in a month!" The fortune teller looked at Xue Er and was shocked and said, "Your face is the color of plaster. I'm afraid you'll die if you don't survive the 50th day. You may not survive the Mid-Autumn Festival!"

Xue Er's first A friend is a clerk in the Yamen. One day, when he was walking on the mountain road, he heard that the governor went hunting in the mountains, so he stopped to watch. Soon I saw a grizzly bear chasing a man. In order to save people, he picked up a wooden stick on the roadside, rushed forward, and started fighting with the grizzly bear. After a while, several more military masters came and worked together to beat the big bear to death. It was later discovered that the person the grizzly bear was chasing was the governor. In order to thank him for saving his life, the governor guaranteed his promotion to the magistrate of a small county.

Xue Er’s second friend was a scholar. His grandfather was critically ill. He notified his descendants to come back to see him die, and also told his family: Whoever returns home first will give away the five thousand taels buried in the back garden. Give him gold. Because the scholar had a strong sense of filial piety, he rushed back to his hometown overnight. When he arrived at his home, his grandfather had not yet died, so he immediately gave him five thousand taels of gold.

Xue Er saw that the two friends who met him had fulfilled their fate, and thought that he might not be able to escape bad luck, so he took out his money and did good deeds, built bridges and roads, and applied coffins and medicines. He thought: Death will come sooner or later, what do I have to worry about?

One day, Xue Er went for a walk in the Qiantang River and saw a man who seemed to want to throw himself into the river. Xue Er immediately stepped forward, hugged the man, and asked him the reason for committing suicide.

He replied: "My name is Hu Rui, and I am from Yangzhou. I pooled the funds of several brothers to come to Hangzhou to buy goods. Unexpectedly, a hurricane last night sank the cargo ship. Although I saved a small life, I wanted to come He wanted to go, but he had no face to return to his hometown. It would be better to die, so he wanted to commit suicide by throwing himself into the river." After hearing this, Xue Er persuaded him and donated 2,500 taels of silver. Hu Rui asked Xue Er to leave his name, but Xue Er refused.

Half a month after the Mid-Autumn Festival, Xue Er was walking on the street and met the fortune teller Gui Yan Qi again. Ghost Eye Qi said in surprise: "Mr. Only then did he understand in his heart the principle of "following each other's heart, doing good deeds and preserving longevity". He smiled at the fortune teller, explained the whole story, and thanked him for his advice.

Later, Xue Er devoted himself to good deeds and lived to the age of ninety before dying without any illness. (Page 19 of "Destiny is in Your Heart") He built embankments and started schools. He was distinguished in appearance and Wen Rushi, nicknamed Po, was a native of Longshan Township, Shunde County, Guangdong Province. He was admitted as a Jinshi in the 49th year of Qianlong's reign. (Before he was developed, the physiognomist said that he could only be a fourth-rank official in his life).

In the fifty-ninth year of Qianlong's reign, the Great Embankment in Guangdong collapsed. Wen Rushi returned home because of Ding You and saw the people displaced. He knew that building embankments was not an easy task. According to the old practice, taxes were levied based on the size of the fields. However, he did not follow the previous method. He persuaded the wealthy people in Shunde County to donate money to complete the construction of embankments. In addition, he also established a charity school and was willing to do good deeds and help others.

Later, when he returned to the capital, the fortune teller looked at his face and said in surprise: "You must have cultivated a lot of merit when you returned to your hometown. Otherwise, how could your face and bones have changed so much? You can He was promoted to a second-rank official!"

Wen Rushi told the fortune teller what happened, and the fortune teller smiled and said, "Looking comes from the heart, your future is limitless!"

Later , he successively served as the examiner in Guangxi, Sichuan and Shandong, and also presided over the Shaanxi and Gansu Colleges, and was promoted to the Minister of War. His son Wen Chengti passed the imperial examination in the sixth year of Daoguang's reign, entered the Hanlin Academy, and became the chief officer of the Ministry of Punishment. One day, they met Mr. Chen Xiyi. After seeing their faces, Chen Xiyi said: "You two have beautiful features, straight noses, red moles on your mouth, white ears and bright red outlines. You are clear and clear, and you are both from the same department. Besides, you are so bright now, you must go to the same high school!”

When the autumn exam period came, the two brothers went to Beijing at the same time and stayed with relatives. . A young, beautiful and coquettish widow lived next door. Xiaobiao was determined to learn and remained unmoved. Xiaoji couldn't control himself and actually had an affair with the young woman.

Later, he was discovered and told the widow's tribe. The widow was afraid of sin and committed suicide by drowning herself in the river.

After the autumn exams, the brothers went to see Mr. Chen Xiyi again.

Chen Xiyi was shocked when he saw it and said: "The appearance of you two brothers has changed a lot. One has become better and the other has become worse. Xiaobiao's eyebrows are purple, and his eyes are Yao Wenxing must have been in high school. Xiaoji's green eyebrows have changed, his eyes are floating, his lips are red and straight, his straight nose is red and black, his white ears are dry and burnt, his expression is slumped and withered, and his air is cold and scattered. This must be him. Damaging morals and changing appearance. Not only will he fail in this exam, but it will also be a sign of premature death. "

After the results were announced, Xiaoji failed and died of depression.

Later, Xiaobiao became a high official and became famous. He had many virtuous descendants. On his 70th birthday, Mr. Chen Xiyi also came to congratulate him and expressed his impromptu remarks: "It is easy to see the appearance of ordinary people! But it is not easy to tell the fate of a person accurately, because fate depends on heaven and appearance depends on man. If If you can comply with the laws of nature and harmonize human affairs, you will be prosperous in the world. People's spirits will suddenly gather and disperse, and people's ambitions will suddenly relax. Everything inside will be reflected on the outside (the thoughts will affect the appearance). God is selfless, and blessings can be achieved. Because of sins, sins can be redeemed by good deeds. They are born in the heart and manifested in the face. They cannot escape the eyes of others. This is called blessings and misfortunes. They can only be brought by people."

Gao Xiaobiao's family, young and old. , I appreciate and admire Mr. Chen Xiyi’s principle of “seeking blessings and avoiding disasters” very much. We all wrote a motto in writing to be vigilant at all times. (Page 14 of "Destiny is in Your Heart") With a humble heart and a sinister face, Zhang Shixuan's parents passed away one after another when he was young. His uncle raised him as if he were his own child.

His uncle had seven children. One day, his uncle told Zhang Shixuan: "I should divide the property into two parts for you!"

Zhang Shixuan said: "I can't bear it. Let all the cousins ??get one share, please divide it into eight shares!”

My uncle refused, and Zhang Shixuan repeatedly declined. In the end, the uncle had no choice but to do what Zhang Shixuan said. Zhang Shixuan was only seventeen years old at the time and was recommended to the capital in advance.

There are more than twenty people living with Zhang Shixuan. After looking at everyone's faces, a fortune teller pointed at Zhang Shixuan and said, "This is the only young man who can be in Nangong Gaodi!"

People in the same dormitory rebuked the fortune teller and said: "We have been through all kinds of examinations for a long time, are we not as good as that young boy? If you don't get it after the results are released, I will spit in your face!"

The fortune teller replied: " I am not familiar with articles, but I saw that this young man had a sinister look on his face, so I admired him!”

After the results were released, the fortune teller’s words came true. He is over 70 years old, but he still has the spirit of immortality. Although he is proficient in medical skills and facial appearance, he does not show off easily.

At that time, the magistrate of Gaoyao County came to visit Qingyun Temple. There was a staff officer named Liu who accompanied him. Because he was familiar with Elder Dahui and knew that he was good at numerology, he told the magistrate. The county magistrate asked Elder Dahui to read his fortune.

Unable to refuse, Elder Dahui reluctantly agreed to the county magistrate’s request. He asked the magistrate to lie down and rest, while he lowered his eyebrows and put his hands together, sitting cross-legged for about half an hour. Then he asked the county magistrate to sit down and relax.

The elder Dahui looked at it intently, and then told the county magistrate with a Buddhist verse: "The living beings are in your hands, and you can accumulate virtue to protect your life."

The county magistrate asked again: "What is my future? ?" Elder Dahui said with a smile: "I am ignorant and dare not predict your future. Great virtues have their own blessings. As long as you can maintain your pious and benevolent heart, you will be a great blessing to the people of the county. ”

The county magistrate knew that Elder Dahui was not easy to talk freely and found that he was very reserved in his words. So when the tea was over, he asked staff officer Liu to go in private to inquire about the mystery.

Elder Dahui told the staff officer surnamed Liu frankly: "When I looked at the appearance of the county magistrate, I found that the brilliance and auspiciousness on his face had disappeared, and it showed a gray-black aura. There was a dark white color on his palms. Fortunately, his original complexion has not faded away, which means that he can be saved in danger, but his life should not be cut off. As a parent official in Baili, his actions and decrees are related to the lives of the people. .

If he had a kind heart and saved the drowning and hungry people, he might be able to benefit all people. Therefore, Lao Na’s final assertion that he accumulated virtue and guaranteed longevity was not just empty talk! "

The staff member surnamed Liu kept nodding and said: "Yes! Yes!" He did not dare to tell the county magistrate directly, but told the county magistrate tactfully: "What the old monk means is that the county is counting. Within a month, you must do a good deed to save many people in order to increase your longevity!”

Soon, the area around Xiling was flooded. Floodwaters rose several feet overnight, inundating farmland and then flooding many homes. Many victims were drowning and cried out for help.

The county magistrate went to nearby Gaogang to take a look. He was horrified and unable to deal with the aftermath for a while. Young and brave villagers were seen fleeing for their lives in small boats, but the younger children and infants were not rescued, leaving them floating in the water.

Seeing this situation, the county magistrate suddenly issued an order: Anyone who rescues a child can be rewarded with one tael of silver. The more he rescues, the more reward he will get. As a result, people with boats went out to rescue the children one after another, and more than 400 children were rescued in one day.

Later, the county magistrate was promoted to the prefect of Huizhou. When he passed by Luofu Mountain, he met Elder Dahui again. As soon as Elder Mahamati saw him, he said: "Amitabha!
