The growing religious feelings during the American Civil War are the main reason why the motto "We believe in God" appears on American coins. U.S. Treasury Secretary Salmon P Chase received many requests from devout Christians from all over the country, hoping that the United States would add the identity of God to coins.

The law provides for the use of this maxim when issuing money. Although several laws have played a role, the decree of1March 8 1908 is often cited, which stipulates the use of this motto (although the law does not include pennies, the motto was not added to nickels until 1938).

This motto has been printed on all coins since 1938. The use of this maxim is allowed, but it is not stipulated in the law of 1873. The motto 1957 to 1966 has been added to the paper money.
