Dakar, the capital of Senegal, is located at the top of Cape Verde Peninsula in the westernmost part of the African continent. It is a peninsula city bordering on the Atlantic Ocean on three sides. The Pletu district in the south-central part of the city is called "Little Paris in Africa", the Greater Medina district in the west is a concentrated residential area for local Africans, the commercial district centered on Independence Square in the east, the port area in the northeast and the main industrial area in the periphery. Gorei Island is a scenic tourist center and holiday resort, located in the tropics and regulated by the ocean.
