“If you are destined to preach, you will be liberated; if you are not destined, putting your palms together will bring you joy.” It comes from the classic sayings of the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Master Hui Neng. It means: If there is a destiny, through preaching, people can be freed from their troubles and gain freedom and joy; if not, Yuan, by joining the palms together, can make people happy and feel respected and friendly.
This sentence tells us that those who are predestined can get rid of their worries by listening to the Dharma and learning the Dharma, while those who are not predestined can share joy and happiness by joining their palms and respecting others. Whether it is from one's own practice or from one's attitude towards others, this sentence contains profound truth.
