Geological engineering is a major that studies the mutual restriction between human engineering activities and geological environment. In recent years, with the vigorous development of China's infrastructure, geological engineering has attracted much attention.
The major of geological engineering in my university has two directions, namely, engineering geology direction and geotechnical drilling and excavation engineering direction. This major is a four-year undergraduate program, awarded with a bachelor's degree in engineering. The engineering geological direction takes the engineering geological direction as the advantage, focusing on solving geological engineering problems and geotechnical engineering technical problems related to various engineering construction. The direction of geotechnical drilling and excavation engineering lays a broad foundation for students from geology, soil mechanics, rock mechanics, basic engineering design and construction, geotechnical drilling and excavation equipment and technology, and pays attention to practical links, so that the trained students have the ability to study and solve practical problems in geological engineering and geotechnical engineering.
In terms of curriculum, these two directions are similar, such as engineering mechanics, geotechnical mechanics, engineering geology and so on. Depending on their employment orientation, geological engineering (engineering geology) will also study mineral petrology, structural geology and other courses, while geological engineering (geotechnical drilling and excavation engineering) will study soil mechanics, basic engineering design and construction, geotechnical drilling and excavation equipment and technology and other courses. In terms of employment, the former fields are mainly geotechnical engineering and basic engineering, water conservancy and electric power survey and design, traffic planning survey and design, metallurgical mine engineering, construction engineering design and construction supervision, real estate and property management, and the employment situation is good; The latter mainly includes engineering survey, basic design, construction and management in the fields of municipal administration, transportation, water conservancy, geology, oil and gas, as well as design and production enterprises and scientific research institutes related to geotechnical drilling and excavation machinery.
At present, the demand for geological resources in China society and even in the world is increasing, the attention to geological environment and safety is increasing, the scale and quantity of engineering construction are expanding, and the demand for geological engineering specialty will increase in the future, so the development prospect of geological engineering specialty is good. But correspondingly, the employment environment of geological engineering is more difficult and the work task is heavier, so boys have more advantages than girls in employment. Perhaps because of employment considerations, the number of female students in this major is relatively small. Taking my grade as a reference, the male-female ratio of engineering geology is about 8: 1, and the male-female ratio of rock and soil drilling is even more disparity, which is 16: 1.
