Granny Liu in A Dream of Red Mansions is such a person.
In Baoyu's eyes, she is a "poor woman" and Daiyu describes her as a "female locust". Yuanyang and Xifeng both laughed and teased her, treating her as a "woman" (a fun-maker), but she took it lightly and laughed it off.
But it was this poor woman who tried her best to help Qiaojie, the daughter of Xifeng, when Jiafu was robbed, in return for her kindness and saved Qiaojie's life.
This passage is the verdict in A Dream of Red Mansions, where Liu refers to Granny Liu.
Granny Liu seems to be poor, but she has three treasures, which is enough to make her invincible at any time.
The first treasure: the idea of being poor and thinking about change
Grandma Liu is an old widow with a long history. Her daughter married a man named Wang Cheng (a little dog). Wang Cheng's ancestors used to be a small official and were also related to Jia Baoyu's mother, Mrs. Wang's family. But now she is going downhill, and life can't go on. Urban hukou has become a rural hukou.
However, Wang Cheng also has some merits. He has difficulties, but he took in his widowed mother-in-law, Granny Liu, and lived alone.
Poor farmers live a very poor life, and it is normal that "there are no idle fields in the four seas, and farmers starve to death". What's more, Wang Gou was not raised by farmers and was once rich. He can't adapt to the change of identity, and there are not many solutions. By the end of the year, Wang Gou will only drink and have no choice.
Although Granny Liu is poor, she is not as pessimistic as her son-in-law. She tried her best to give advice to her son-in-law, reminding him that he could ask Mrs. Wang, who is married to Jia's family, for help.
When the son-in-law could not save face, Grandma Liu stepped forward and took her grandson to Jia's house for help. There are two considerations: first, I heard that Mrs. Wang is "more and more sympathetic to the poor and the elderly" when she is older, and it is easier to get Mrs. Wang's sympathy by combining the old and the young; The second is to sound out the tone first. If not, Wang Gou, as the head of the family, will not lose face too much.
Granny Liu accepted the great trust of her children and went to Jia's house for help. However, under the escort of Mrs. Wang, Zhou Rui's family was introduced to Jia's house. Granny Liu failed to meet the headmaster, Mrs. Wang. Now Jia's housekeeper is Mrs. Wang's niece Xifeng.
Granny Liu is a poor woman after all. She walked into the Guo Rong Building for the first time. She is timid at heart, but in order to achieve her goal, she tries to express her goal even if the words don't convey the meaning. Finally, she achieved her goal. When the family member Xifeng gave her twenty taels of silver, she asked her to make clothes for the maids, which solved the urgent need of Wang Gou's family. Because of this money, Wang Gou's family has a start-up fund.
A year has passed and life at home has improved. Grandma Liu's first thought was to go to the mansion again. First of all, she expressed her gratitude. Second, her relatives are getting closer and closer. This line cannot be broken. Maybe she will encounter difficulties in the future and need Mrs. Wang's help.
Grandma chose the simplest way to express her gratitude. She packed several pockets, filled with fruits and vegetables produced in her own field, and took them with her.
Xifeng thanked Granny Liu for her kindness and invited her to stay for the night. This was heard by the grandmother Jia, who happened to be talking to an old man, so granny Liu saw for the first time in her life how the rich and powerful people lived.
The second treasure: ordinary people are not very transparent.
Granny Liu is an old widow and poor, but she is born with some knowledge. When she entered the Guo Rong Building for the second time, her attitude was obviously relaxed and her transparent personality was displayed.
This time, she accompanied Grandmother Jia to visit the Grand View Garden. Granny Liu became a joke to many ladies and gentlemen in the Jia family along the way, but she took it in stride and didn't care at all.
Not only did she readily accept the arrangement of Xifeng and Yuanyang, but her mind was full of flowers for everyone to play with, and she also confessed that she had an affair when she was young and loved flowers and powder.
During the dinner, she laughed with everyone and made fun of herself:
Yuanyang apologized to her afterwards, and Granny Liu smiled again.
At the end of the trip to the Grand View Garden, Xifeng asked Granny Liu's only daughter's name and said to Granny Liu:
Granny Liu readily accepted Xifeng's entrustment and named her daughter Qiaojie, thus forming a deeper fate with Xifeng. Before leaving, grandma Liu received a lot of gifts. At the same time, Pinger, the servant girl, also told Mrs. Wang, "Don't ask for relatives or friends in the future."
Water is clear, not because it contains no impurities, but because it knows how to precipitate; The permeability of the heart is not because there are no distractions, but because you understand the choice.
Grandma Liu has a transparency that ordinary people can't reach, which was obtained after the world was cold. Let her relatives live a good life, support her inner strength, let her make a choice and give up her self-esteem.
As soon as Granny Liu entered Guo Rongfu, Xifeng gave twenty taels of silver. Here's a detail. At first, granny Liu didn't intend to take it all, but took out a small piece of silver and thanked Zhou for his recommendation. Granny Liu is poor, but she is not blind to money. She has a grateful heart and is a person worthy of help.
Grandma's later actions confirmed this.
Grandma Liu must have been in contact with Jia Fu, but there are too many strokes in the book that have never been mentioned. However, when the Jia family was destroyed, they were deeply influenced by Jia's kindness to others. Only this poor woman, who has been remembered for thousands of years, tried her best to raise money and rescued Qiaojie who was pushed into the fire pit.
In Gao E's sequel, Qiaojie's father Jia Lian is not at home. Qiaojie is victimized by her treacherous brother Jia Huan and her vicious uncle Wang Ren, and she is almost sold to Wang Fu as a slave. Maid Pinger accidentally asked Granny Liu about the cause of the downfall of Jia's family, and gave an idea to save Qiaojie. Later, he became a matchmaker, married the squire Zhou family and lived a stable life.
Another version said that being sold into a brothel, Granny Liu tried her best to sell Jia's gifts to raise enough money to be rescued from the fire pit and let her grandson marry.
No matter which version, it shows that Granny Liu is a kind person.
Qiaojie's judgment also proves this point:
Wang Xifeng has been secretly giving her private money to help her brother Wang Ren, but after her death, it was her closest relative's uncle who wanted to hurt her daughter. Life is really ironic. She thinks that poor granny Liu has repaid her kindness with all her money.
Grandma Liu is a poor woman with low status, but her personality is much more noble than those so-called nobles. Her "three treasures" are particularly valuable, guiding Grandma Liu to save herself and benefit others.
