In Zhu Kezhen's mind, a talent with the quality of "seeking truth" must have the following three qualities besides patriotism:
First, we should have a "clear and rational mind" and develop a "meticulous and in-depth" thinking habit. He pointed out that what a country needs most is not science and technology itself, but whether its people have scientific minds. "If ordinary China people don't have scientific minds, even if the streets are full of engines and electricity everywhere, science can't develop."
Second, it has the spirit of "distinguishing right from wrong, not worrying about interests" and the spirit of "risking one hundred lives to gain true knowledge", and does not blindly follow and disagree. Zhu Kezhen believes that the purpose of science is to pursue the truth. Those who pursue the truth must break through what ordinary people see, know and think, not be confused by customs, not go with the flow, be rational-oriented, dare to question and challenge traditional authority, just like Bruno, Galileo, Darwin and Huxley, pioneers of modern western science, even if they go through fire and water.
Third, have innovative consciousness and ability. In Zhu Kezhen's view, "the education provided by universities is not to provide ready-made knowledge, but to open up basic channels, provide methods to acquire knowledge, cultivate students' research criticism and reflection spirit, and enable scholars to actively seek knowledge and keep learning.
