According to legend, the cemetery is in Haozhuang, Xianggongzhuang Town, Zhangqiu. According to historical records, Sima Qian listed him as the head of Zou Yan and called him "Yan Yan's skill is great and grand".

He applied the theory of five elements, which was popular in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, to the historical viewpoint, and put forward the historical view of "five virtues and constancy", that is, the whole material world is composed of gold, wood, water, fire and earth, and the development and change of things are realized through the coexistence of five elements; The development of human social history is objective and inevitable, just like nature.

The theory of five virtues ends at the beginning.

Zou Yan's conclusion of five virtues.

Zou Yan believes that "five virtues" refers to the five virtues represented by the five elements of wood, fire, earth, gold and water. "Beginning" refers to the cycle of "five virtues". Zou Yan often used this theory to explain the changes of history and the rise and fall of dynasties. Later, the supreme ruler of the imperial dynasty since Zhu Yuanzhang, the founder of the Ming Dynasty, often called himself "serving the heaven and carrying the emperor", in which the so-called "carrying" means the "moral" luck that means the end of the five virtues. Since ancient times, society has been circulating in the order of the transfer of five virtues. A dynasty is dominated by one virtue, and each virtue has its ups and downs. Desheng, prosperous dynasty; Moral decline, the death. Therefore, the history of human society is based on the law that the five elements coexist and resist each other.
