" Nothing is impossible without a will "was said by the sage Wang Yangming. This famous saying is a summary of the essence of China's traditional culture, and it is also a guide for contemporary people to behave and do things. We all want to achieve something meaningful or a career in this world, but we should know that to achieve a career is first decided by ourselves, that is, it is related to our aspirations.
Wang Yangming was demoted to Guizhou, and after "realizing Taoism in Longchang", he founded Longgang Academy, gathered disciples to give lectures, and set up a famous learning rule for scholars-"Dogma shows all students in Longchang". There are four rules, the first of which is "determination". He warned the students: "If you don't have a will, nothing can be achieved in the world. Although there are all kinds of skills, there is no one who is not motivated. " In his view, whether it is a sage or a hero, or a hundred skills, everyone has the possibility of achieving a career, but first of all, they must be determined.
without determination, we have no goal to move forward. And how can a person without a goal achieve anything? Whether you want to achieve your inner personality or your outer career, you must first establish the goal of struggle.
Wang Yangming believes that whether a person can become a sage or not depends on whether he has the ambition to become a sage. He put forward in "Dogma Showing Life in Dragon Field": "Therefore, if you are determined to be holy, you will be holy; Determined to be virtuous, then virtuous; If you don't stand up, like a boat without a rudder and a horse without a title, what will happen in the end? " A boat without a rudder and a horse without a chew drift with the water and run at will, and the final result can only be nothing. Many people know that we should set a goal, but it is valuable to set a goal that is both high and practical.
Wei Yuan put forward an important principle when talking about the goal of national governance pursued by a gentleman. He said: "A gentleman's rule is also a rule. Without the heart of more than three generations, it will be vulgar. If you don't know the situation below three generations, you will be pedantic." The gentry in the late Qing Dynasty, represented by Wei Yuan, were active in the military, political and academic circles at that time, and made great achievements in promoting the modernization of China precisely because they were a group of true gentlemen who were neither vulgar nor pedantic. Their aspiration is to unify their idealism with the spirit of realism.
Secondly, without determination, we have no motivation to struggle.
if we want to achieve our career, we must have motivation, and the goal we set through determination is the motivation for our hard work. In order to stimulate the struggle motivation of scholars and gentlemen, the scholar-officials in the Song Dynasty put forward the progressive struggle goal of "being a scholar, being a sage and being a saint, and being a saint", which is to hope that scholars and gentlemen will gain the struggle motivation when they constantly improve their goals. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, when reflecting on the lessons of the demise of the Ming Dynasty, the scholar-officials thought that it was not enough to talk about the achievement of sages' personality, and it was necessary to have a heroic spirit, so that there would be no painful history of national subjugation and world subjugation. Therefore, the heroic spirit became the aspiration of the times when the scholar-officials ran around and shouted during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Wang Chuanshan, Huang Zongxi and Gu Yanwu, the famous representatives of scholar-officials in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, all called for heroic spirit. Wang Chuanshan reflected on the lessons of the demise of the Ming Dynasty, and thought that a scholar-bureaucrat must have a heroic spirit of combining wisdom and courage and creating achievements.
similarly speaking, the pursuit of sages' personality, when you come to Wang Chuanshan, you must have the ability to learn the world, the boldness of vision to explore the world, and especially the ability to create social achievements. Therefore, a large number of outstanding scholar-officials in the Ming and Qing Dynasties had a high personality ideal, that is, they demanded a "sage-hero" personality. For example, Zuo Zongtang in Qing Dynasty was the pursuer of this kind of "sage-hero" personality. In his youth, Zuo Zongtang had the ambition of "being without half an acre, worrying about the world" and "being a famous Confucian or a famous scholar". Therefore, Zuo Zongtang not only "read thousands of books, but also paid attention to the study of the world." At the age of 17, after reading the historical geography book "Reading Historical Records" in the early Qing Dynasty, he "played with great concentration, liked the dangers of mountains and rivers contained in it, and knew everything about it", which laid the foundation for his knowledge and ability to command the Xiang army in the future. The "sage-hero" personality determination of "not being a famous Confucian, but being a famous scholar" is the driving force for Zuo Zongtang's hard work all his life.
thirdly, without determination, we can't inspire our potential.
Everyone has a certain potential, and determination can stimulate these potentials. Especially, once a person sets a lofty ambition, he can stimulate his own potential even more, which can be transformed into indomitable will and indomitable strength. Confucius' lifelong pursuit is "there is a way in the world". Despite all kinds of hardships and even being laughed at by many people, he never stopped pursuing his goal.
let's talk about another example of the Xiang army. Zeng Guofan was also determined to be a "sage-hero" during his studies. Although the Confucian generals in Xiang Army were born of Confucian scholars, it is striking that, inspired by the ambition of defending their hometown and maintaining Confucianism, these Confucian scholars showed the military temperament of daring to do things, resolutely making decisions and being tenacious, which is an important condition for them to lead the army, go to the battlefield, fight bloody battles and become Confucian generals. Zeng Guofan emphasized: "As sages, each has his own way of self-improvement, so he can be independent and fearless, and he is really unyielding"; "As for the word stubborn, but indispensable. You must have this word in your essay, otherwise you can't accomplish anything. " Zeng Guofan became the representative of a generation of Confucian generals. It was precisely because of his lofty aspirations that he inspired his potential and transformed it into indomitable will and indomitable strength. (Source: Guangming Daily, Author: Zhu Hanmin)
