Two years later, King Wu Fu Chai personally led an army to attack Yue. There were two very capable doctors in the State of Yue, one named Wen Zhong and the other named Fan Li. Fan Li said to Gou Jian: "Wu has been training its troops for almost three years. This time they are determined to take revenge, and the coming force is fierce. We might as well defend the city and not fight them."

Gou Jian disagreed and also sent a large army to fight against Wu. Chinese people fight to the death. The armies of the two countries fought in the Great Lakes area. The Vietnamese army was indeed defeated. King Gou Jian of Yue took 5,000 remaining defeated generals and fled to Kuaiji, where they were besieged by the Wu army. Gou Jian was at his wits end. He said to Fan Li: "I regret that I didn't listen to you and got into this situation. What should I do now?"

Fan Li said: "Let's go and sue for peace as soon as possible." Gou Jian sent Wen Zhong to King Wu Go to the camp to seek peace. Wen Zhong explained Gou Jian's willingness to surrender in front of Fu Cha. King Wu Fu Chai wanted to agree, but Wu Zixu firmly opposed it.

After Wen Zhong returned, he found out that Bo Pi of Wu State was a greedy and lustful villain, so he gave a batch of beauties and treasures to Bo Pi privately, asking him to speak well to Fu Chai.

After some persuasion by Bo Chu in front of Fu Chai, King Wu Fu Chai ignored Wu Zixu's objection and agreed to Yue's request for peace, but he required Gou Jian to go to Wu in person.

Wen Zhong went back to report to Gou Jian. Gou Jian entrusted the state affairs to Wen Zhong and took his wife and Fan Li to the State of Wu. When Gou Jian arrived in the state of Wu, Fu Chai asked the couple to live in a stone house next to Helu's big tomb, and asked Gou Jian to feed his horses. Fan Li followed and worked as a slave. Every time Fu Chai went out in a carriage, Gou Jian would pull his horse for him. After two years of this, Fu Chai thought that Gou Jian had sincerely surrendered to him, so he let Gou Jian return home.

After Gou Jian returned to Yue, he was determined to take revenge and avenge his humiliation. He was afraid that the comfort in front of him would weaken his ambition, so he hung a piece of gall in the eating place. Every time he ate, he would taste the bitter taste first, and asked himself: "Have you forgotten the shame of Kuaiji?" He also removed the mat. , using firewood as a mattress. This is what later generations recited as "Lie on the firewood and taste the courage."

Gou Jian decided to make the country of Yue rich and powerful. He personally participated in farming and asked his wife to weave her own cloth to encourage production. Because the country of Yue suffered a disaster and its population was greatly reduced, he formulated a system to reward childbirth. He asked Wen Zhong to manage national affairs and Fan Li to train people. He humbly listened to the opinions of others and helped the poor people.
