Content introduction:

What is the root of humanity behind the distorted ideology?

Like all books that excite readers, there are heroes and villains in the distorted material of human nature. But because the author is thoughtful and generous, the evil deeds and great achievements written here are different. In fact, sometimes the roles are reversed. John Banville

The main body of this book is Berlin's Eight Chapters of the History of Thought, which discusses the views of famous thinkers such as Machiavelli, Vico, Herder, Fichte and University Students on human history, and combs the significance and influence of utopia, romanticism and nationalism. By tracing the development of various ideologies from their origins to extreme forms, we can deeply reflect on human nature. The author quotes Kant's famous saying that "the bent wood of human nature can never create straight things" and puts forward the following philosophical questions: Is there only one real answer to all the important questions of mankind? Is it impossible for the real value pursued by human beings to conflict?

This revised edition is based on the second edition of Princeton. The new appendix provides rich background information, including letters from Berlin and several articles that were not included before, especially his subtle comments on Russell's History of Western Philosophy.
