When you look at the map of western China, the most eye-catching thing is the huge yellow-brown no-man's land - the Taklimakan Desert. The famous Kizil Thousand Buddha Cave is located 25 kilometers due west of Kuqa County on the northern edge of the desert. The Mingwudage Mountains where the grottoes are located are within the territory of the ancient Qiuci Kingdom (one of the ancient Western Region Kingdoms, located in today's Kuqa County, Xinjiang). Facing the picturesque Mingwudag Mountain, looking around, you can have a panoramic view of the majestic Kizil Thousand Buddha Caves; on the wide cliff, the grottoes are stacked on top of each other, scattered like honeycombs, and spotted like leopard flowers. . Between the grottoes and under the cliffs, the red willows look like fire, the poplars are dripping with green, the creeks are flying with white flowers, and the strange peaks are piercing the blue sky. The mountain light, water color, green trees and grottoes complement each other and each show their splendor, forming a very beautiful picture.
The Kizil Thousand Buddha Caves were first built in the 3rd century and were constructed successively until the 11th century. After thousands of years, it has preserved 236 caves and 10,000 square meters of murals. It is the westernmost of the four famous grottoes in my country. It is also the largest Buddhist cultural site in Xinjiang. A large number of Chinese and foreign scholars have come to Kizil Thousand Buddha Cave to investigate, and have made great gains in many aspects such as history, Buddhism, art, architecture, etc. People call this place the "Second Dunhuang in China", and in the near future, It will be more famous in the world than Dunhuang.
The Kizil Thousand Buddha Cave is a treasure house of ancient Chinese Buddhist art. The most exciting one is the existing murals covering tens of thousands of square meters. In the caves of different sizes and shapes, there are not only well-preserved Feitian, Jiletian, pagodas, Bodhisattvas, Arhats, Buddha statues, eight parts of the heavenly dragons, Buddha's life stories, Buddha's biographical stories, sutra pictures, but also A large number of folk custom paintings: landscapes, flowers and birds, birds, animals, donors, production and life scenes, etc. Many of the pictures contain touching stories.
In the Buddhist biography paintings in Cave 76, there is a rare picture: Sakyamuni is sitting on the stage, without any clothes. His body is quite thin, with ribs visible, and his arms Like two white bones. What the picture shows is the scene of enduring hunger and asceticism. On his right side, there are three gorgeous witches standing. The one in front is completely naked, with her left hand pointing at the Buddha's body, her right hand on her waist, and her legs crossed in a graceful dancing posture. This coquettish witch with plump breasts and fat buttocks forms a very sharp contrast in form and expression with the Buddha, who has a withered face and sits solemnly upright. The name of this painting is "Picture of Subduing Three Witches". The scene depicted in the picture is that after Sakyamuni became a monk, he practiced Buddhism for 6 years and gained nothing. He meditated under the Bodhi tree in order to pursue the Buddha's path. Just when he was about to achieve enlightenment, the devil sent three witches who were good at illusion and deception to seduce Sakyamuni to prevent him from attaining enlightenment. Sakyamuni was indifferent to the witch's charms. He sat calmly in his arms, did not look evilly, and remained unmoved. Although the witch "takes off her clothes, dances, sings, or moves her waist" and does all kinds of charming and flattering things, Sakyamuni remains the same, with his heart only toward the Buddha, showing a superhuman strong will. In the caves, there are many murals with exquisite art and vivid stories like this.
