Reading Notes 7# "Zeng Shiqiang Talks about the Weaknesses of Human Nature" (Zeng Shiqiang)

The following is my personal experience of reading books. It only represents the sharing of personal opinions. It can be discussed and should not be taken seriously.

Mr. Zeng Shiqiang is known as the "Father of Chinese Management" and was a former Taiwanese He is a professor at National Chiao Tung University and the president of Taiwan Hsing-Kuo School of Management. He is the author of "The Enlightenment of Hu Xueyan", "The Mystery of the Book of Changes", "Chinese-Style Management", "Family Education", etc. I knew that he started from the Baijia Forum, and I met him by chance. Here comes the book.

In fact, reading Mr. Zeng’s books gives me the feeling of having a thorough understanding of life. His words are very simple and direct, but when you chew them again, you will feel as fresh as chewing mint.

Looking at the table of contents of this book, you will find that the author explains it in the main context of "what-why-how".

First, how to define human nature? Mr. Zeng believes that human nature is the most common nature of human beings under normal circumstances. Although human nature is similar, everyone adopts different strategies due to their different human nature, resulting in different behavioral habits, and some are even far apart - "Sex is similar, habits are far away". What are the weaknesses of human nature, and what are they? The author generally classifies the weaknesses of human nature into three aspects: survival, selfishness, and happiness:

1. The most important weakness of human nature is that everyone wants to survive. Everyone wants to survive, so everyone has similar weaknesses. It's just that the ways of survival are different, so their habits are very different. The weakness of survival gradually evolved into greed for life, fear of death, and finally turned into only caring about oneself.

2. Taking care of yourself to a certain extent becomes selfish. If survival is the first level of weakness of human nature, then selfishness has entered the second level of weakness of human nature. The manifestations of selfishness are represented by greed for profit and fame. The results of greed for profit and fame will ultimately be attributed to greed for enjoyment.

3. Coveting for enjoyment to a certain extent will turn into the pursuit of personal happiness. Therefore, the pursuit of happiness has become the third layer of weakness of human nature. This layer of weakness focuses on stimulation, competition and possession, leading to all kinds of overt and covert struggles, which is extremely distressing.

Why does human nature have these weaknesses? The author believes that there are four reasons:

1. Pursuing longevity due to limited life

2. Pursuing interests due to limited materials

3. Instinct needs Chasing Happiness

4. Because there are ideals, there are weaknesses

At the same time, the author also uses history to confirm these views - since ancient times, everything has changed, only human nature has not changed , human history is a history of exploiting each other's weaknesses. In the age of theocracy, ghosts and gods were used to make people fear them; in the age of monarchy, discipline was used to make people obey; in the age of civil rights, ideas were used to control freedom; in the Internet age, the media was used to exaggerate weaknesses.

So how to objectively look at these weaknesses of human nature?

1. The main purpose of studying the weaknesses of human nature is to clearly identify adaptive strategies, use weaknesses and be used to a reasonable extent, in order to turn weaknesses into strengths and help yourself and others.

2. The weaknesses of human nature are not all shortcomings of human nature, because the pursuit of survival, selfishness and enjoyment are basically the driving force for human progress. All ambitions are actually based on these foundations. As long as we remain reasonable, survival, selfishness and enjoyment not only do no harm, but actually have benefits.

3. The weaknesses of human nature are just people’s potential desires. Seeking survival, selfishness, and seeking happiness are all no problem when analyzed. The reason why they form the three major weaknesses of human nature is mainly because of the problems of people themselves, which turn problems that are not problems into serious problems.

4. Life is an attack and defense of human weaknesses. Regarding the weaknesses of human nature, regardless of attack or defense, it is best to adopt a mentality of adaptation and utilization, and do not have the idea of ????controlling or exploiting, because only pure motives can achieve good results. Whether your motives are pure or not is entirely a personal matter and has nothing to do with others. Respect the weaknesses of human nature and attack or defend appropriately to achieve reasonable results. Based on such thoughts, the motives are pure.

5. Weaknesses are not necessarily shortcomings. Sometimes weaknesses may turn into strengths. Everything depends on human beings and everything works on its own.

The weakness of human beings is that they have the ability to choose, but lack the quality of judgment; they have the ability to create, but they often go in the wrong direction, transforming the living environment into an increasingly unfavorable environment for human survival. A person's life is nothing more than proving what kind of fate he has.

Furthermore, the author talked about the six strategies of the media to take advantage of human weaknesses:

1. Create a pessimistic atmosphere to make everyone feel the pressure of survival, selfishness and enjoyment, constantly Only by imagining the worst-case scenario can the media continue to attract everyone's attention;

2. Provide novel things, and the public caters to the media's strategy of seeking novelty and change, and tries its best to play various tricks to attract the media High-priced acquisitions or priority broadcasting;

3. To create new authorities, the media’s strategy is to promote those who can cooperate best as authorities;

4. To vilify authority figures, generally When the public sees the media praising someone as an authority and then knocking him down, they feel that the media has the power of life and death, so they pay more attention to the media;

5. Create various idols;

6. Highlight sex and violence.

Finally, the author explains how to do it from several specific aspects:

1. Think more about others when you have money, so that you will know how to make money and spend money, and you will not become a degenerate person. A slave to money will not be harmed by wealth. When you have no money, you need to reflect on yourself more, so that you can repent early, start over, and establish a healthy, positive and optimistic outlook on life. You are neither humble nor arrogant, do not complain about others, do not feel sorry for yourself, and do not feel shameless.

2. Don’t show off when you are proud, and don’t complain when you are frustrated. Gains and losses must be regarded as a necessary process in life, not the final result. The process will change. To prolong your intentions and reverse your frustrations, you need to be reserved and restrained, have strength and not show it casually, be able to hide what others cannot hide, and hide what others cannot hide.

3. Exercise, and exercise again, is the only magic weapon for those who are physically weak. Psychological cooperation is also very important. If you are sick, you should seek medical treatment. After diagnosis and treatment, you should forget about your illness. Have the confidence to continue to hint and encourage yourself through various methods, and you will soon regain your health.

4. Be humble when you are young and avoid being stubborn when you are old. This is a coping strategy for age. Each generation has different growth backgrounds and experiences. It is best to respect each other and not force others to have the same feelings and opinions as you.

5. When you advance, you want to retreat, and when you retreat, you want to make a comeback. Naturally, you can advance and retreat.

6. When you are the master, you must be magnanimous, and those who obey will do their best; when you are subordinate, you must not assert yourself too strongly, you must stick to your opinions reasonably, and cleverly introduce examples to make the master understand. own meaning, and thus change the original intention to avoid mistakes.

Throughout the book, Mr. Zeng has a profound understanding of the weaknesses of human nature, which makes people deeply aware of his profound theoretical understanding of ancient China. The most profound words in this book that I personally feel are: "Revealing from a hidden position and exposing one's human weaknesses just right can not only motivate oneself, but also allow others to have the opportunity to respond reasonably and interact appropriately. The weaknesses of human nature can also be seen Adult needs must be hierarchical. ”

Let’s use the author Mr. Zeng’s key words to summarize this book - the most appropriate mentality is Lao Tzu’s saying “all things will transform themselves”. . If people want to live a carefree life, they can only admit that the weaknesses of human nature are good or bad, let them be displayed naturally, appropriately, and reasonably and be used by others, and they can naturally respond to them, so that they can be active and still.
