1934, deidre and Hemingway fell in love at first sight on a French luxury cruise ship. At that time, Hemingway had just finished his trip to East Africa and was going to return to American Reef via Paris, while Dedler finished his last trip to Germany and was going to return to Hollywood. From then on, the two began to correspond. Hemingway once revealed to a friend: "When deidre floated on the water and swam to those eyes chasing her, I sank." Deidre wrote in a letter to Hemingway, "I think it's time to tell you that I've been thinking about you. I read your letter over and over again, put your photo in my bedroom and often look at it helplessly. " This kind of love is very pure and platonic. Even they believed there would be a story, but nothing happened at the moment of night arrival.
Hemingway's letter to the then famous German movie star marlene dietrich was made public. The two once called their relationship "Platonic", but from their correspondence, we can see that there are many words of love. In one of the letters, Hemingway wrote, "I love you, too, because you are breathtaking." And signed the nickname "dad" at the end of the letter. In another letter, Hemingway also asked Marlene what kind of cigar she smoked in the film, so that he could smoke the same cigar as her. These Hemingway letters from Cuba, France, Italy, Spain and Kenya from 1949 to 1959 were donated by Marlene's daughter to the Kennedy Library in Boston.
