Day to learn from Lei Feng:
Since Mao Zedong wrote an inscription and issued a call for Lei Feng on March 5, 1963, every year since then March 5 has become the officially designated "Learning from Lei Feng Day". The government has led the whole country to set off a craze to learn from Lei Feng's spirit. Lei Feng's name is resounding throughout the country and he was portrayed as a model figure in mainland China from the 1960s to the 1980s. "Lei Feng spirit is the spirit of serving the people wholeheartedly, that is, the communist outlook on life or socialist collectivist values." That is to follow the Communist Party politically, work hard, take the initiative to help others, and be diligent and thrifty in daily life.
After the 1990s, the official argument for guiding people to learn from Lei Feng was no longer "loyal to the revolution and loyal to the party" but became "learn from Lei Feng and do good deeds." Some commentators believe that due to the gradually deepening wave of social reflection, the craze for "learning Lei Feng's spirit" has ceased across China. As a result, the current generation of primary school students' understanding of Lei Feng is not as good as before, and their impressions are vague. Since 2008, the Communist Party of China has changed the past practice of calling on the official media to learn from Lei Feng on March 5 every year, and has not promoted learning from Lei Feng in official newspapers and periodicals.
