Shi Kai was born in Fuzhou City, Fujian Province in 1951. His original surname was Liu and his alias was Jizhou. He changed his surname to Shi after pursuing an art career. Young people learn calligraphy, seal cutting, painting, and poetry from teachers such as Chen Zifen, Xie Yigeng, and He Dunren. He moved to Beijing in 1998 and became a professional seal cutting calligrapher and a member of Canglang Book Club. He has successively served as vice chairman of the Fujian Provincial Calligraphers Association, seal cutting member of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, and professor of the Chinese Calligraphy Institute.
He is a top figure in China’s printing industry. His sealing style has influenced contemporary sealing circles. As early as the mid-1980s, the seal world was known as a "three-legged tripartite", that is: Wang Yong stood tall in Beijing; Han Tianheng lived in the sea; Shi Kai led the coquettish people in southern Fujian. He, Wang Yong, He Yinghui, Wo Xinghua and others are known as leaders of "popular calligraphy style" and "heavyweights in Chinese calligraphy circles". Started seal cutting at the age of 16.
