As the last master of Confucianism in the late Qing Dynasty, Zeng Guofan left few works, but his letters were the most widely circulated. He wrote thousands of letters in his life, covering a wide range of topics, including self-cultivation, dealing with people, making friends, education, reading, politics and military affairs. His letters from home are simple in style, free in form, fluent in writing and simple in content. It has a strong appeal, persuasion and influence. The content of his family letter can be simply summarized as "cultivate one's morality, keep one's family in order and level the world"
Zeng Guofan was deeply influenced by Zhu Cheng's Neo-Confucianism. He pays special attention to self-cultivation and self-reflection. He inherited the teachings of the three provinces and created an atmosphere of self-criticism and never forgot to cultivate himself. His self-cultivation classes are mainly honesty, quietness, honesty and perseverance.
Zeng Guofan's way of running a family is mainly embodied in these 16-character proverbs: "Thrift is prosperity, diligence is health, and diligence is poverty!" The key to educating children to keep a house is to work hard on the word "thrift". He also asked his children to keep their true colors, not to be infected with bad habits, and not to develop the femininity of dude. He often tells his children that "frugality is easy, but frugality is difficult".
Zeng Guofan also insisted on his own set of principles in employing people. He accepts talents, makes good use of them, and makes the best use of them. He doesn't ask the source of heroes, doesn't belittle talents, and actively supports the younger generation. He treats people with virtue. Zeng Guofan put forward that "you can't have both ability and political integrity, and those who are good at profit can't be reused"; People who want to show off too much will not be long; People with brilliant talents and extreme personalities should use it with caution; Carefully advertise "people who take the initiative to suffer losses"; It is not recommended to those who have a bad reputation, who are promoted too quickly and are unwilling to be officials.
