Although there are many things in the movie "Watergate Bridge" that make people complain, there are also some details that are very shocking and hide a lot of real historical information.
In the plot, after the volunteers occupied Xiajieyuli, a soldier of our army (didn’t see who it was) heard a call from the US military radio on the table, claiming to "occupy positions south of Shuimen Bridge, kill There are more than 500 Chinese soldiers." Later, our soldiers who understood English angrily destroyed the radio station with a submachine gun.
This detail may be familiar to viewers who have watched the movie. Some people may wonder that the Volunteer Army lacked radio stations at the time. How could such an important seizure be destroyed so casually? In fact, this line from the US military hides the bloody battle on Highland 1081.
The term "1081 Highland" only appears once in the movie. When Song Shilun, the commander of the Ninth Corps played by Zhang Hanyu, was arranging the Seventh Company to raid Shuimen Bridge, he talked about our army's garrison at 1081 Highland at Shuimen Bridge. Zhang Hanyu's lines are also a plot echo of the US military radio call.
Highland 1081 is where the third "Ice Sculpture Company" of the Ninth Corps of the Volunteer Army took place. This company is the 2nd Company of the 1st Battalion of the 180th Regiment of the 60th Division of the 20th Army. The other two ice sculpture companies occurred at Dead Eagle Ridge and 1221 Heights respectively. However, the battle at Highland 1081 may be more complicated than imagined.
On December 8th and 9th, the 1st Battalion of the 1st Marine Regiment of the US Army launched an assault from Jinheung-ri in the south towards Sumun Bridge in order to meet the main force of the 1st Marine Division that broke out south. Highland 1081 is a key commanding height on the south side of Watergate Bridge. Under the indiscriminate bombardment of "Pirate" fighter jets, the 1st Marine Battalion successively occupied several small highlands near Highland 1081, and then on the morning of the 9th, a US company rushed to Highland 1081 in a "sneak attack". All the volunteers on the highlands were killed in the battle, and the US military claimed to have "killed more than 500 Chinese soldiers" on the highlands.
This is the historical origin of that line on the US military radio.
In fact, the volunteers stationed at Highland 1081 and several surrounding highlands encountered an extremely cold temperature of minus 34 degrees on the night of December 8. The first battalion of the U.S. Marines who attacked at that time suffered severe frostbite. It is conceivable that the volunteers were short of food and clothing. On the night of December 8, it may have been a limit point for the Ninth Corps. This time the extreme cold caused more severe frostbite and attrition, causing almost all our troops that intercepted and pursued the US military to lose their combat effectiveness.
It is said that the 1st Battalion and 2nd Company of the Volunteer Army all froze and died on Hill 1081. The US military's attack on Hill 1081 was a "win without a fight", and only the volunteers who had frozen to death in the trenches were seen.
But in fact, in the US military memoirs I saw, there was a fierce battle in Highland 1018. The US military even recalled that it raided a makeshift command post house on Highland 1081 and used hand-to-hand combat to eliminate the volunteer soldiers inside. Moreover, the battle at Highland 1081 lasted from the early morning to the afternoon of the 9th. The US military suffered more than 100 casualties (it claimed that most of them were frostbite, and there were 20-30 combat casualties). It was not a state of "win without fighting" at all.
Objectively speaking, if there are more than 500 volunteers on the high ground, or even a complete company of volunteers (145 people), then the US military will never be able to attack it with only one company (less than 200 people) . Moreover, after half a month of fierce fighting and severe frostbite, the 20th Army of the Volunteer Army at that time could not possibly still have such abundant troops on a high ground.
Then there may be only one truth, and that is that most of the 1st Battalion and 2nd Company of the Volunteer Army in the 1081 Highlands were frozen and sacrificed due to the severe cold on the night of December 8. In fact, only a few survivors participated in the battle, and in Some more were sacrificed by U.S. planes during the bombing. Even the few surviving soldiers, facing a complete company of US troops, still caused a lot of damage to the enemy and eventually all died.
However, there are serious bugs in the historical details hidden in the "Watergate Bridge" movie.
That’s time being messed up!
The bloody battle at Highland 1081 took place on December 9, and the last battle to bomb the Shuimen Bridge (i.e. the third time) took place on the night of December 6, and was completed by a small unit of the 240th Regiment of the 27th Army (i.e. The prototype of Seventh Company in the movie "Watergate Bridge"). The U.S. military airdropped the M2 bridging components on December 7, and the watergate repairs were completed on December 9, almost at the same time as the bloody battle on Highland 1081.
