1. No time to talk about common officials:
When Di Renjie was a child, a member of his family was murdered. County officials came to inquire, and everyone rushed to defend themselves. Only Di Renjie was reading a book and ignored him. Faced with the county officials' questioning, he replied: "I am talking to the sages in the yellow scroll, and I have no time to deal with you secular officials."
2. A hidden gem in the ocean:
Di Renjie was falsely accused by a minor official in his early years. Yan Liben, the minister of the Ministry of Industry, was the deposed envoy of Henan Province at that time. During the interrogation, he found that he was a talented person with both political integrity and talent. He praised him: "Confucius said: 'You will know benevolence through observation.' You can really be said to be a treasure in the ocean." Later generations used "the hidden pearl in the ocean" as a metaphor for buried talents or buried talents.
3. Baiyun's relatives:
When Di Renjie was an official in Bingzhou, his parents were far away in Heyang (governing present-day Meng County, Henan). He climbed up Taihang Mountain, looked back to the south, and saw a white cloud flying in the air. He said to the people around him: "My parents live under that white cloud." He stood and stared for a long time until the white clouds dispersed before leaving. Later generations used "Baiyun Qinshe", "Baiyun Gufei", etc. as words for visiting a foreign country and missing their parents.
4. A person from Dounan:
When Di Renjie was serving as the Bingzhou Facao, his colleague Zheng Chongzhi had to go far away for business, but his mother was old and sick. Di Renjie took the initiative to confront Zheng Chongzhi: "Your mother is seriously ill and you are traveling far away. How can you let your relatives worry about you who are thousands of miles away?" He went to see Shi Linrenji, the governor of Bing, and asked to travel on Zheng Chongzhi's behalf.
Lin Renji was very moved. Thinking of the discord between himself and Sima Li Xiaolian, he felt deeply ashamed and took the initiative to reconcile with Li Xiaolian. He often praised Di Renjie to others: "There is only one wise man south of Beidou." Later generations used "Dounan one person" to describe a unique talent in the world.
5. Outline of the Purge:
During the reign of Emperor Gaozong, Prince Zuo Si Lang Zhong Benli relied on the emperor’s favor and became arrogant and domineering. Di Renjie impeached Wang Benli and requested that he be handed over to the judicial department for trial. However, Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty issued an edict to forgive him.
Di Renjie admonished: "Although the country lacks talents, it does not lack people like Wang Benli. Why should your majesty cherish this person at the expense of the king's law? If your majesty must pardon Wang Benli, then Please banish me to an uninhabited land as a warning to future loyal ministers!" Wang Benli was punished for this.
Later, Di Renjie impeached Si Nongqing Wei Ji, saying that the Suyu, Gaoshan, Shangyang and other palaces he supervised were too magnificent. Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty dismissed Wei Ji from his post, and from then on the court became solemn.
