David Rice Acheson was born in Kentucky. He worked as a lawyer in Missouri, then entered the U.S. Senate, served as a Missouri senator, and was elected as the temporary speaker of the U.S. Senate 16 times. 1At noon on March 4th, 849, james knox polk, the president of 1 1, officially stepped down. According to the Constitution, 12 President Zachary Taylor needs to take office on that day, but Taylor, as a devout believer, refuses to do so because it is a Sunday and belongs to Christianity.
Because Polk has stepped down as president, and the new President Taylor refused to take office, and Vice President Mildred fillmore had not taken office that day, according to the provisions of the US Presidential Succession Act, the temporary speaker of the Senate was the second in line to succeed the president, so Acheson, who was the temporary speaker of the Senate at that time, was arrested as acting president.
Because March 4 is not a working day (Sunday), there are not many national events to deal with that day. Acheson only stayed in the White House for one morning, then went home to sleep in the afternoon and slept until noon the next day. By noon on March 5th 12, Taylor was sworn in, and Acting President Acheson officially "stepped down" and returned to the Senate to take office until 1855.
Acheson was interviewed by reporters the day after he stepped down as acting president. Someone asked him what state affairs he had handled during his presidency. Unexpectedly, Acheson replied, "Congress is too tired to work, so I spent the last 24 hours in my sleep." Everyone at the meeting laughed.
Acheson lived 3 1 year after leaving the Senate, at the age of 79. After Acheson's death, the US government specially engraved the words "David Rice Acheson served the President of the United States for one day" on its monument to commemorate it.
