China in ancient books and records —— Compendium of Materia Medica
From the grave canon to the legend, everything is relevant. Broad but not complicated, detailed and important, comprehensive core after all, straight into the deep sea. Do you only look at medical books? The subtlety of real reason, the general code of things, the secret of emperors, and the treasure of subjects. -Introduction to Compendium of Materia Medica Wang Shizhen
Li Shizhen was born in 1518. During the Zhengde period of the Ming Dynasty, he wrote Compendium of Materia Medica, which was a masterpiece of materia medica before the Ming Dynasty. It was the first time that the compendium system was used to classify drugs, and this kind of compilation style created the precedent of herbal works in previous dynasties. Li Shizhen was born in a family of traditional Chinese medicine, and his medical ambition is to be realistic, that is, the scientific spirit of seeking truth from facts and being pragmatic.
We knew that Compendium of Materia Medica was written by Mr. Li Shizhen when we were young, but we didn't know the story behind it. After reading this issue of China in Classics, we realized the hardships and difficulties that Li Shizhen wrote this book at that time.
Although he was born into a medical family, his father did not let him study medicine when he was a child. He repeatedly asked his father to let him be a doctor. "I am like a boat against the current, my heart is stronger than stone, I hope my father will be full of ambition, and I am not afraid of difficulties until I die." This is what Li Shizhen said to his father when he was young and determined to practice medicine.
Later, Li Shizhen followed his father to practice medicine for many years. Often, because he encountered the situation of distinguishing the wrong medicine and grasping the wrong medicine, he saw the people's expectation for good medicine and the difficulty for patients to seek medical advice, which strengthened his determination to rebuild materia medica.
It is difficult to study medicine, practice medicine and study materia medica. Since then, Li Shizhen has consulted more than 8 ancient books, researched various materia medica in Qian Shan, dressed in wind, frost, rain and snow, kept a solitary lamp, and finally wrote the medical masterpiece Compendium of Materia Medica in nearly 3 years.
It's just a pity that the Compendium of Materia Medica has just been carved, and Mr. Li Shizhen died. He didn't see the book he worked hard for all his life finally put in front of him.
