1930, richard halliburton, a traveler and adventurer, won an honor at the peak of his fame: Vanity Fair included him in the celebrity list of "our nominated forgotten people". Vanity Fair quoted Halliburton's famous saying when awarding the prize. He "made brilliant rackets with brave young people. To be fair, it also admitted that halliburton's books were "extremely readable" ... so popular that their authors became millionaires. "As for forgetting, the magazine will finally get what it wants. Nowadays, he is almost forgotten except for a reader who stumbled across a book called halliburton in his grandparents' attic.

To no avail, Halliburton got a fatal forgetful agent within ten years of Vanity Fair's downfall, and disappeared without a trace in a garbage shipwreck in China on March 1939. He recently turned 39.

Nevertheless, halliburton managed to accumulate a lot in his relatively short life according to a philosophical thought expressed in his first book, The Royal Romantic Road 1925. He wrote: "Let those who want to be respected be respected." . "I want to be free, free to indulge in any willfulness in my imagination, and free to look for beauty, joy and romance in the farthest corner of the earth."

This is almost what he started to do from the day 192 1 left the university. He created an endless life, and he recorded it in his book, titled Glorious Adventure and Conquering the New World, articles in many magazines and newspapers, and as many as 50 lectures every month.

Along the way, he climbed the Matterhorn, was locked up in Devil's Island, spent one night at the top of the Great Pyramid with the French foreign legion, rode an elephant across the Alps, played Robinson Crusoe on his desert island, met pirates and headhunters along Odysseus' route, bought a two-seat plane called Flying Carpet and flew to Timbuktu. He swam across the Nile, Panama Canal, Venice Grand Canal and even the reflection pool of the Taj Mahal. In fact, he seems to find it almost impossible to put on clothes with water. Although Halliburton was educated in Princeton and the son of a wealthy family in Memphis, he likes to describe himself as a tramp and travel as little as possible. When it comes to train tickets, he is very frugal. He often doesn't buy tickets at all and takes measures regardless of the conductor's request. He recalled passing through India. "If I hadn't pushed him off the train first, a particularly annoying collector would have pushed me off the train."

Halliburton's view on romantic travel seems to have a particularly charming influence on the young people of his time. His young fans include: Mrs Bird Johnson, Lenny Bruce and Vince Lombardi. When he was a young college student, walter cronkite heard a speech by Halliburton, which convinced him that journalism might be a fascinating career. Cronkite recalled: "He was a bold adventurer, journalist and best-selling author, as handsome as a movie star," and he "conquered the audience with superb plays." And a pair of black squirrel puppies. Halliburton Company wanted to take a panda on a trip, but later it was found that it would get seasick.

About two and a half weeks after a three-month trip, Hailong encountered a huge storm, strong winds and waves estimated at 40 to 50 feet. The last radio message was sent by the captain, but it sounded like Halliburton. The final conclusion is: "Have a nice day. I wish you were here, not me. " Later that day, I lost radio contact with Hailong.

Honolulu Coast Guard refused to search for the missing garbage in halliburton. Jonathan Root speculated in his biography halliburton: 1965 that he might suspect that his disappearance was just another famous publicity stunt. However, unlike earhart, the public soon lost interest in Halliburton, which may be because the cruel reality of World War II made the world look less romantic and his antics seemed stupid.

Only one year after his death, halliburton tried to sum up his life. Time magazine wrote, "Halliburton is not only a bad writer, but also an unacceptable public figure. He is a charming and confused man, an American phenomenon and an American symbol.
