In science, a research-oriented degree is called MPhil, that is, Master of Philosophy. Don't think of the master.
Philosophy is a bachelor's degree in philosophy, which is exactly what the University of Hong Kong has adopted in the British education system. Therefore, when you apply, you should see clearly whether it is MSc or MPhil. . . I applied for statistics of Hong Kong and Chinese at that time. I thought it was teaching-oriented and the result was research-oriented. . . It was because I was not sensitive to this MSc and MPhil.
For the same major, the application of research type is more difficult than teaching type. There are few or no research-oriented master's degree places for mainland students in some majors, so the research-oriented master's degree places for these majors can only be applied by Daniel, and the doctoral degree places for mainland students in some majors will be a little more than MPhil (PhD)
Philosophy, similarly, cannot be directly understood as a doctor of philosophy). MPhil and PhD generally need to be magnetized with the professor in advance.
The selection criteria of universities in Hong Kong mainly depend on the following aspects: school background, achievements in the first three years of undergraduate course (all achievements including compulsory public election, if you have graduated, you must look at the achievements in the four years of university), project experience (mainly depending on the projects related to the major you are applying for), language achievements, personal ability and documents (such as PS, RL, CV, etc.). ), Gmat/GRE scores, etc. Business, law and education (except HKU) will have higher requirements for language.
Pre-preparation:
About the grade point:
The GPA of our school is 5, and the GPA algorithm is-50)/ 10 as the GPA of this course, for example, 83 is converted into 3.3. Then GPA is weighted and averaged by credit. The undergraduate grade point of this crane is 3.3. Common algorithms of GPA 4 for going abroad: (a)
85- 100 = 4.0(B)80-84 = 3.5(C)75-79 = 3.0(D)70-74 = 2.5(E)60-69 = 2.0(F)
0-59= 1.0. I figured it was 3.5.
. But for Shenzhen Port, they can look at your report card directly and don't have to worry about how to calculate GPA algorithm. CUHK's Chinese and English transcripts only show the final scores of all subjects, not whether they failed or not, nor the grade points of any algorithm. For majors that are not particularly popular, according to the algorithm of 5 in our school, it is better to have a GPA of not less than 3.0, and a GPA of 3.3 is more certain.
About IELTS and TOEFL:
As all universities in Hong Kong teach in English, it is necessary to provide proof of English language proficiency. Now Hong Kong not only accepts IELTS scores, but also accepts TOEFL scores. HKUST will no longer accept Band 6 scores. Other schools rejected Band 6 when they applied last year. It's hard to say what will happen in the future. So it is necessary to take an IELTS or TOEFL test. Then the question is whether IELTS is better or TOEFL is better. There is a general saying that low IELTS scores are easy to test and high TOEFL scores are easy to test. Schools in Hong Kong have a single subject requirement for IELTS, but not for TOEFL. This is the IELTS test, which can give you a reference. I am an old student of college entrance examination English. I didn't learn English in the first two years of college. College entrance examination English 133, CET-6 for the first time 450. IELTS preparation time is more than 3 months, during which I participated in the top class of global IELTS. The total score of the initial test is 6.5, listening 7.5, reading 7.5, writing 5.5 and speaking 6. The language requirement of Hong Kong schools is that the total score of science and engineering is not less than 6, and the single subject is not less than 5.5. Business, law and education generally require a total score of 6.5, and a single subject is not less than 6 (some require a single subject to be not less than 5.5). However, some majors require a total score of not less than 7 and a single subject of not less than 6.5 (such as finance of HKU). However, the general total score and single subject are 0.5 points higher than his required score to be more sure. For the students educated in China's national college entrance examination, IELTS writing and speaking are very difficult to test, so you will find that IELTS single subject requirement is a very painful thing. It is not easy to get 0.5 points from 5.5 in writing and speaking, both of which have some luck. I think IELTS 7 is equivalent to TOEFL with at least 95 points. In addition, the 7 points of elegant thinking may be 8 points in listening, 8 points in reading, 6 points in writing and 6 points in speaking, so that even if the total score meets the requirements of a single subject or not, TOEFL will not have such problems. Similarly, it is quite certain that the TOEFL score is more than 5 points higher than the minimum score required by the school. Therefore, if you want to take the high score part, you must take the TOEFL.
About the application materials:
The materials to be prepared include Chinese and English undergraduate transcripts, IELTS or TOEFL transcripts, personal statement (PS), two letters of recommendation (RL) and resume (CV). Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy will also submit a research plan (RP). PS is particularly important. It is an important medium for packaging and displaying your whole person, and professors can get to know you through it.
About PS: PS:PS is used to package and promote yourself. If you want to write your own PS package, I can give you some hints. The length of PS is generally 600-800 words, and the content can write about the degree of correlation between the courses you have studied in your undergraduate course and the major you have applied for, and what advantages you have in this respect (such as which related courses have high scores and are in the top position, which courses teachers have followed, which related projects you have done, which experiments you are proud of, which works you have completed, which related awards you have won, etc.). ); If it is an interdisciplinary package, you should write down what efforts you have made in the professional direction you want to apply for, what achievements you have made, what related projects you have, and your internship experience. If the minor is in this field, you must talk about it. In short, let the professor see your enthusiasm for studying this major and let him feel that you have a certain foundation to take the postgraduate exam. In addition, write down why you chose this school, why you chose this major, what plans you have for your future career, and even some hobbies related to applying for a major. These are several aspects that a PS needs to cover. All the content is to highlight your advantages, express your sincerity and catch the professor's eye. I don't need to repeat the importance of PS, so let everyone feel it directly: the professor is likely to ask you questions according to the description in your PS during the interview.
About RL: Many people say that professors don't read letters of recommendation very much, but they are just a formality. I wonder where this rumor came from. But you don't know if the professor will read it carefully, so you should write it well, right? The length of the recommendation letter is generally about 400 words, and it is best to print an A4 page after typesetting. The recommendation letter must praise yourself from the teacher's point of view. If you speak from the teacher's point of view, you will feel fake if you can't describe you in detail. I won't elaborate on how to praise myself. If you have a very good relationship with the teacher, he is willing to help you write. You can ask him to write directly. I usually write it myself. Contact the teacher to show it to him. He thinks it's okay to sign for you. Signing is signing a letter of recommendation. If you don't talk much in class, communicate with the teacher after class, and do projects with the teacher, without a very familiar teacher, then you will be very cheeky. I sent an email first, and the teacher sent a text message without responding, and then called directly. Generally, the teacher will directly refuse when calling. If no one answers the phone and you really want him to be a reference, you can go directly to his class to block him. You have to be thick-skinned anyway. Then, what kind of teacher are you looking for to sign a letter of recommendation for you, preferably one related to the major you are applying for, and at least one professor level. What's more special is that Chinese in Hong Kong should download a recommendation form and let the recommender fill it out and send it directly, or wrap it in an envelope and send it to himself. HKUST's recommendation letter is to fill in the contact information of the recommender on his system. After you pay the application fee, the system will send an email to your recommender's email address. If there is a link to open in the email, submit the online recommendation form online. If you don't want the teacher to send you another email, you can write a printed article for the teacher to sign, and then upload a scanned copy in the upload material part of the application system after scanning, which has the same effect as filling in the online recommendation form.
About resume: it is also important to highlight your academic level in the professional field you are applying for, such as the third place in the 800-meter sports meeting and the first place in the college basketball game, which is relatively unimportant. If there is room for other content, write it. If it is a major that has nothing to do with academics, it is still worth writing. This airline's resume has these parts: foundation.
Information, language ability, education, research experience, extracurricular
Activities, awards, additional information, a page of A4 paper after typesetting, you can refer to it.
About RP(MPhil and PhD should be replaced by MSc): Since this crane is MPhil of HKUST, there is a section called Vision Statement in MPhil, an online application system of HKUST.
/research suggestions/supplementary information, there is no such section in the online application system of MSc, and this section has three parts, vision.
The presentation part is divided into several minor questions (similar to those mentioned in my PS above), so there is no PS and RP in the system when the materials are finally uploaded (especially the RP that needs to be uploaded and scanned in anthropology and sociology), so there is no need to write a separate RP, and a 200-word paragraph is filled in the RP part of the online application system. About how to write RP, this is a relatively academic thing, and it doesn't need to be particularly specific and profound. You can't write a paper before class, just write the general direction and your own ideas.
About all kinds of award certificates: not to mention scholarships, which is the best proof that you are an excellent student.
Temporary application:
Applications from Hong Kong are processed on a first-come-first-served basis. Because the professor wants to recruit enough people, complete the admission work as soon as possible, read your materials, and if you think you are qualified, I will give you an offer. In the future, some offers have been sent out, and the number of places is getting less and less, so the more people apply later, the higher the requirements for professors and the higher the threshold for students who apply early. So you'd better prepare the materials as early as possible, and apply immediately when the online application system of colleges and universities opens in 10. The application fee can be paid directly by VISA card, which is very convenient. After applying for the offer, he will inform you to pay the reservation fee. If you don't pay the quotation, it will be regarded as giving up. After handing it in, if you go to this school to study this major, the appointment fee will be paid. If you don't go in the end, the reservation fee will not be refunded.
Generally, Hong Kong applications are divided into two rounds, and the start and end time of each round is different. The first round of application starts on June 5438+ 10 every year. The exception is that the statistics of the University of Hong Kong only started to apply in February 65438+last February, if I remember correctly. The starting and ending time of each professional application shall be subject to the announcement of official website. Generally, the second round of application starts around 1 or February of the following year and ends in March or May. If you fill in a major in the first round, the second round of application will not be open. The second round will usually be filled in one month before the application deadline, but even if the quota is full at that time, the application system will still be open. Actually, I mean the earlier you apply, the better, that is, first come, first served.
You can see the professional introduction and requirements after you find the project you want to apply for. After clicking on the application system, all kinds of information will be filled in. It should be reminded that the application of HKUST is partly academic.
Qualifications, education should be filled in, and the duration of the project means filling in 4 and finally completing 4 years.
Learning refers to the number of academic years completed, which is 3 GPA for senior three students now. I filled it out according to a perfect score of 4, so I don't want to choose the category of the prize.
The applicable. HKUST information is scanned online first, and the original will not be sent to you until the offer is sent to you.
If you apply to send your own materials, you need to be reminded that when HKUST applies to upload scanned copies online, don't rush to pack the transcripts, scan (or take photos) and then stamp them. HKUST's recommendation letter can be submitted in two forms, which is mentioned in the RL part of the preliminary preparation, and it is not necessary to send it there. I use SF Express to send materials to Hong Kong, which feels reliable enough and usually arrives the next day. You must have the contact number of the material recipient. Sometimes the material address written on the application page doesn't say the phone number, so you have to go to the website to find the phone number of the department office yourself.
If you are applying for MPhil or PhD, you need to send an email to the professor in advance. There are contact information of professors on the websites of various colleges. Generally, the first email is a self-introduction, showing the professor the report card and the projects he has done, expressing his views and interests on the research direction of the professor, expressing the graduate students who want to become professors, and asking some questions related to the application or academics. Then the professor speaks slowly when he has an answer. The professor thought you were about to make an appointment for an interview.
Regarding the interview, some majors will have it, and some majors will not, depending on the enrollment situation of the year. Interview in English, and sometimes ask some special academic questions in Chinese. Some majors will have professors come to some provincial capital cities in Chinese mainland to organize interviews, and some majors are telephone interviews or online video interviews. There are many questions about electricity and internet, such as introducing your school, your current major, etc., and others are general.
Question. What questions will the specific major ask? There should be some interviews online more or less. You can find it yourself or ask the brothers and sisters who have been admitted to that major.
It is worth noting that if you feel that your qualifications are not bad but you have not received the interview notice, but other students with similar qualifications have received it, don't panic yet. Send an email to the professor to explain your situation and ask if you are qualified for the interview. Sometimes it may be because too many people applied for this major, and the professor missed the examination of the materials. If the professor thinks you are qualified, but the interview time organized in the provincial capital city has passed, he will invite you to Hong Kong for an interview at the weekend.
Post-program:
About files and hukou: you can refer to the contents of the school hukou, or you can go to the employment guidance center for advice and see what to do. Archives and registered permanent residence are two concepts. Everyone must have seen the account, but the file should not have been seen. Our files are kept in the archives of the East Campus. Generally, it is better and more convenient to put files and accounts together for various procedures. The registered permanent residence of this sculpture is a school collective household. Since Hong Kong does not accept hukou for further studies, I either return my hukou to my birthplace or hang it in my school. There are several options for choosing the location of affiliated schools: 1, affiliated with the talent market, and paying a certain affiliated fee to the talent market. 2. You know a person who has the right to receive first-class personnel in a large enterprise and can help you link your account with their company's collective account, which is equivalent to signing a contract with the company (note that the company must have the right to receive first-class personnel, otherwise you need to link your account with the talent market after signing with him). 3, affiliated with the local student service management center, pay a certain fee, its affiliated role is equivalent to the talent market, the difference is that after staying in the service organization, you can handle these businesses, which is more convenient to do together. 4. After the suspension, the account and files can be kept for two years free of charge, but during this period, you can't go abroad, get married, work permit and other procedures. This method can be used as MSc for one year, but I don't know if I can get the endorsement of students staying in Hong Kong before it is suspended. Please consult the teacher of the employment guidance center for details.
