Shanghai Library is a modern and multifunctional large-scale public library with a building area of 83, square meters. The library has a total collection of more than 13.2 million volumes, with 38 reading rooms, 24 research reading rooms, 8 audio-visual materials research rooms and 3,36 reading rooms. The new Shanghai Library covers an area of 3.1 hectares, with a building area of 83, square meters. It was opened to the public on December 2th, 1996. The new building absorbs the characteristics of modern Shanghai architecture and embodies the image of combining grandeur, conciseness, elegance and rationality. Its main building consists of two tower-shaped high-rise buildings with heights of 58.8 meters and 16.9 meters respectively and a five-story podium. Both the east and west floors are multi-dimensional stepped blocks, symbolizing the solid foundation of cultural accumulation and the continuous climbing of human knowledge. The new museum has broken through the previous three traditional divisions of collection, editing and reading, and adopted a flexible and diversified open space pattern, so as to achieve a compact layout, clear streamline, flexible space and change. In order to make it easier for readers to borrow books, the new library ensures that the new books published in 5-8 years will be publicly displayed in the reading room, and has set up 25 reading rooms of various types, patent and standard reading rooms, audio-visual and electronic reading rooms and a large-scale open-shelf lending library of Chinese books. In order to make researchers have a quiet and comfortable research environment, 32 single-person research rooms have been opened. The new library introduces the latest computer and communication technology in the world, and electronically manages the main business links. For example, in information management, the internationally influential library system management software is directly introduced, and after secondary development, computer management is implemented for interviews, cataloguing, circulation, continuous publications and public inquiry systems. At the same time, the CD-ROM graphic storage system was introduced and developed, and various special databases (full-text database of rare ancient books and modern Shanghai picture data database, etc.) were established. The automation management system of the new library is connected with major information networks at home and abroad, and has become an important network node information hub in Shanghai. In order to enrich the cultural life of the citizens, the new museum opens various cultural facilities to the public, such as a lecture hall with 872 seats, two exhibition halls with a total area of 1,8 square meters, a multi-function hall with 3 seats and three academic activity rooms, and is equipped with mobile multi-channel simultaneous interpretation equipment. In addition, various venues and equipment inside and outside the museum are used according to local conditions to hold cultural exhibitions, popular science, works presentation, author signing ceremony, painting and calligraphy mounting and ancient books restoration demonstration, etc., especially holding various lectures for the society has achieved good social and economic benefits. In October 1995, Shanghai Library and Institute of Science and Technology Information merged, and since then, it has entered the stage of "prospering the library through science and technology". Shanghai Library has more than 1, staff, 14 functional departments and 1 business centers, and has more than 4 million books and materials. Shanghai Library is open every day throughout the year. At present, it has issued 3, readers' lending cards and received 1, readers every day. It is in a leading position among public libraries at home and abroad.
